I don't think private games help or hurt for points. The reason for them is to control the type of player you are playing against. If you don't want to deal with players who deadbeat / kamikaze on first turn / make alliances within the first 2 rounds / anything else that annoys you, you can set up a ...

The reality is, you CAN play without a point system if you just ignore your score. Play who you want, or just your friends. If you take points away, people care less about losing and the competition gets weaker.

Play poker against somebody who has money on the line, then play against someone ...
