Yep we really don't much care. We will rule them no matter who is elected.saxitoxin wrote:I was amused by yesterday's 5-minute report on British official state media that said: "Americans are intensely interested in the UK's election."

I'm not an American but I live in America and I saw a 20-second bit at the end of last night's NBC Nightly News that mentioned the UK is having an election today. There have been a few sidebars on the back pages of some newspapers here. On KNX radio news here in Southern California they mentioned, during the top-of-the-hour news briefs, that the the Phillipines were having elections this week but no talk of anything happening in the UK.
I guess if the Empire can at least pretend it exists or anyone takes notice of it anymore that's good enough to preserve everyone's feelings.

In the time since I made my last post I actually just heard a promotional here on Pacifica Radio that I have on the background here in my home office that said they are having a 30-minute special this evening at 6PM after Amy Goodman's show that will be all about the Philippines general election. Still nothing about the UK, though.jefjef wrote:Yep we really don't much care. That's what I found. I posted it on the "other" British election thread. I'm guessing you're a big Labour person.icedagger wrote:307/255/59 according to exit polls. Meh.

I'd probably be on the other side of the spectrum if I lived there, but I understand why you would tactically vote that way. Here in America, libertarians would probably tactically vote Republican. Are you planning to stay up all night for the results?icedagger wrote:Lib dem, although I voted labour tactically (lib dems never get more than about 10% in my constituency). As long as the tories don't get in I'm happy basically

I guess the Philippines is a larger country than the UK, and - as a former colony - share a closer cultural heritage with the US, but still you'd think they'd at least give Britain a nod.

I think the Americans were mulling on what would motivate official British state media to report that Americans were "keenly interested" in UK elections if it clearly was not the case? Not being an American I am interested in that myself, though I've already stated the reason I suspect (i.e. British state media exists, in part, to be a morale booster for the UK people and sometimes puts out "national affirmation" stories.)pmchugh wrote:We know that you americans don't care about our elections, only how many twinkies you can stuff in your mouth.
Now on to the issue, I voted labour in the end. Anyone but tory.

Yeah, labour would probably be the worst vote for libertarians- they're (nominally at least) fiscally liberal and have become socially quite authorative. I'll vote for whichever party with a chance of election is the furthest left economically and the most socially liberal- with new labour's shift to the right, the lib dem views on civil liberties are about the only policies I agree with of any of the major parties, hence my support.bradleybadly wrote:I'd probably be on the other side of the spectrum if I lived there, but I understand why you would tactically vote that way.
