Version 12

Updates:
- Moved/removed a lot of stuff, generally to condense and clean up the map.
- Added like-colored triangles to note certain borders
- Temporarily removed 3+/- pairs from the map (possible gameplay issue)
- Added a small "8-way" attack note next to Transitions

[bigimg]http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/4802/periodicmadnessversion1uh4.jpg[/bigimg]

Discussion Points:
- Is the entire map understandable?
- Is putting "8-way" and a visual reminder an illustration enough to demonstrate the Transition attack direction difference?
- Could we get some lively discussion about the bonuses?
- Is the +/- pair combination bonus good/bad/overkill?
- Are the triangles different enough in shade to stand out against their containing territories, and is it relatively clear what they connect?

To Do:
- General cleanup of element names (some are squished against borders)

Hmm. When I first saw this , I loved the gameplay. Now, it doesn't resemble the things I liked about that map in any way. It's too bad, I was looking forward to playing it.

I really like the new look. The unique gameplay features that remain are much easier to understand.

The gameplay for this map seems very interesting, but, in my opinion, the graphics need work. I think the background should be something lighter colored; The entire map just seems unnecessarily dark right now. I don't love the font either, but it's not terrible.

Also, it took me a few minutes to figure out what that "Same color connect" with the arrows in the legend meant. Maybe move the arrows over and say "Same color arrows connect," if you have enough room.

If I can, I'd like to keep the current font. Having it called Niobium (Nb on that map there) is just poetic justice in action. As for background, suggestions are accepted. I've tried to keep a graphical style of "simple, functional, no more than necessary" for the map, in the same spirit as your average Periodic Table printed in a Chemistry book. Sprucing it up and shnazzifying it would violate that theme in my opinion, but I'm open to suggestions on that too.

I was worried about that when I drafted that section. I'll make that change.

Okay, keep the font then.

As for the background, I agree that it should be simple. But most images in Chemistry textbooks don't have black backgrounds. Maybe try a light gray one, or an off-white? If it looks like crap, you can always revert it to the what it is now.

I like the idea of lightening up the background. You'll essentially be transposing the colors that are currently white and black. If the background (and passable borders) were a light blue or gray or light whatever, the text and impassables could be black. Good luck.

You might make it "8-way attack" since you have some extra room. It's just as clear as the larger picture was though.

I'm really stoked about how much you've simplified the legend and gameplay instructions. Great job.

And, btw, you're welcome and I'm super honored!

Hi Tack,

I really like the way you moved everything around and split up the lanthanides & actinides w/ the broken impassable. Is it now hold any 3 lanthanides and get +1, or should the legend say "1 per consecutive 3"?

I had a moment of boldness: it's any 3. If that makes my XML just crazy, so be it.

Version 13: Dark

Updates:
- Added Triangles to the description of the teleporters
- Added the word "attack" to clarify the "8-way"

Image

Version 13: Light

Updates:
- Switched the background to a light gray
- Changed the borders to solid black
- Removed unnecessary opacity boxes
- Everything in Version 13: Dark

Image

So which do you people prefer? I'm still biased towards the black one because of the ease of contrast between bonus text and the rest of the map.

I really like the white. The legend contrast will need some attention, but it's much easier on the eyes. I believe turning th passable borders white would really be helpful.

I'm not sure about your legend... I think it needs organising better... i.e. grow the map vertically - then have the title at the top of each column? (You've got lots of vertical space to spare...)

SemiConductors? That's the ones on the right yeah?

The Blue is too close to the Transistions (Which I think is the one in the middle?)

And the 8 way think - does that mean that you can 8 way attack if you're in transitions?

What about CD -> GA - can that attack?

I really dislike the + ++ +++ things (I notice some have disappeared over the creation) but they're not explained very well and confuse the map. (Instead of putting them on each territory - what about columnising them?)

Lime green = Bad.

Why can K & RB attack KR & XE (respecitively)?

You're wasting a massive corner of your map with your signatures.

"other metals" <- is there a better name for this?

Hope that helps?

My legend was cluttering the crap out of the map and I cut OUT vertical space to simplify it. I can add a little height to it to spread out the legend, but I'd like to keep its refined simplicity if it's easy to understand.

I'll see if I can address this.

Yes, but not Ga -> Cd, as Ga is not a Transition. I'll add "Transitions have" above the "8 way attack" so it's CLEAR beyond ANY DOUBT who gets that privilege. ;)

I'll see about doing that. Thanks for the suggestion.

See Semiconductor note.

Breaking up the map a little bit. I added those borders so that you could get from one end to the other a little easier without HAVING to cross the Transitions. If you think that's bad for gameplay, let me know.

You're wasting a massive corner of your map with your signatures.

I'll trim shadowsteel's up. Mine's perfectly fine as stands.

"other metals" <- is there a better name for this?

Believe it or not, that's the official Chemistry name for it. Science really doesn't have any other name, as there is nothing spectacular about all those metals except that they're metals.

Hope that helps?

Was thinkiing something a *bit* like this...
[bigimg]http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/1/19/1707364/periodicmadnessversion1jh9.jpg[/bigimg]

So each column is linked in position and colour...

Should also mean that the colour differentiation isn't as necessary (But still slightly necessary)

I wonder if it would work better at the bottom - as that is a flat line?!

Not for map understanding purposes, considering most people read from top to bottom, left to right. Having things at the top might have a few spacing issues, but it'll be immediately understood.
