A VALID COMPARISON

This comparison is fair and proportionate.

"Pure" capitalism and American capitalism (i.e. crony capitalism)

Pretty scary actually. Its more or less what anyone at the top of a corporation aims for, even if they dont know it. And keep in mind, Im not suggesting some kind of grand conspiracy either, just wealth, greed, power and corruption, working towards what it always achieves if allowed to flourish unchecked, as it has been increasingly allowed to do so.

I sometimes feel as though the pains of history, have been in vain, since so few learn from them.

They instead use up the rewards so hard fought, and piss on the memories that sacrificed to gain them.

1) Observe the institutions and outcomes of the current world.
2) Copy-paste observations of #1 into the abstract idea of "pure" capitalism.
3) Add imagined conditions which presumably could never occur in a "pure" capitalist society (corrupted morals, no labor unions, contradictory laws, etc.).
4) Conclude that "pure" capitalism must lead to an overall negative outcome.

How many people mistaken "pure" capitalism, or free markets, as today's capitalism or "free" markets? It doesn't make much sense.

How many people think "pure" capitalism or a "free" market can actually exist is pretty funny.

It is funny, yet it's still a useful construct for examining economic institutions in the real world. It's also an important goal which demands further inquiry.

Suppose all economic exchanges were performed voluntarily (i.e. living in a free market). How would traditional problems, whose problem-solving the state monopolizes, be solved in a free market?

Take any institution and its relevant organizations which solely rely on voluntary exchanges. Why not compare how private entities combat terrorism with the methods employed by states?

It's a fun idea which can lead to a reduced role of the state, and/or developing some model or delivering information which leads to a more efficient and less coercive means of problem-solving.

It also provides guidance for questions on anarcho-capitalism and even communo-anarchism. It requires people to question the legitimacy of the state, its perceived-as-necessary functions, etc.

Without it, we'd have to sit on our hunches and accept everything which the early socialists propounded as true, for there's no ideal model to compare their ideal models too. Who cares about the socialist calculation debate and its consequences from implementing such a plan, amirite?

Here's probably a better version:

InkL0sed, if you're sincere with your position, then let's be logically consistent with it. By laughing, I'm assuming that you're implying that the idea of free markets or "pure" capitalism deserves ridicule. Something like "it's not worth considering," or "that's ridiculous; therefore, dismiss it with laughter."

So, let's apply your criticism to something I immensely enjoy: cinema.

Imagine yourself inside the Actor's Studio with an interviewer who remarkably resembles Will Ferrel's James Lipton.

The interviewer asks you, "What is your ideal film, Mr. InkL0sed?"

You then describe your ideal film. You assert that this film would be the best representation of whatever message you wish to deliver to society. You're doing this for yourself, but you except that many people could benefit from it. You also discuss the ideal mix of a crew which could produce such an excellent work of art: the right producer, your role as the director, the perfect writer, a great combination of sceenwriters, a great editor, the right AV crew, the right actors, so on and so forth.

A lone commenter from the stands suddenly exclaims, "HA! There are people who actually think that such an ideal movie can exist?? What a joke!"

The interviewer and you are puzzled. Is this guy being sincere, or is he just trolling? But more importantly, why is he missing the point? What doesn't he understand here?

That's a really dumb analogy. There is no ideal movie. Art is inherently imperfect – that's what I'd tell Mr. Lipton if he asked me that question.

As a matter of fact, just as you yourself insist all the time, so is policy. There are always unintended consequences and imperfections to any given policy – but that doesn't mean we shouldn't implement any at all, or try to make them better.

I think it's funny that people think "pure" capitalism can work because of historical evidence. A truly free market leads to exploitation of the lower class by the upper, and kills the middle class. It's only through government's influence that we can prevent the worst aspects of a free market. An entirely free market leads to slavery. In other words, it's not that I don't think "pure" or "ideal" capitalism doesn't or can't exist – I think we pretty much saw where that leads in the Gilded Age, and we still see it – it's that I don't think a truly free market is the ideal.

You went on some rant about exploitation and deprivation of the lower and middle classes. What have you been reading? Karl Marx? What do you know about economics?

Define capitalism. What's a market, InkL0sed?

How much do you really know?

Sure, my analogy doesn't fit perfectly, but you're still missing the point about the usefulness of having an ideal model. I haven't even gotten into "pure" capitalism because that whole course of action faces severely diminishing returns.

Maybe if I dropped the part about art and focused on the production process of the film, then it could work, but first I'd love to hear you explain yourself.

Yeah. In the beginning there was Mao, and then he created China, and then it was attacked by barbarians, and then Mao came back and kicked all the barbarians out, and then China got really powerful again.
