If you really want to make this site more family friendly, you should be praying that flame wars stays. Think about it, without flame wars, where would all the "flamers" go? If it offends you that much, dont click the link, its simple.

How does this effect you? Why do you care if you consider a forum to be filled with the ancient decedents of man come back from the past? PhatJoey, I don't know what else to tell you other than to not go to Flame Wars if you don't like what's posted there. Think of it as adding someone to your ignore list.... they can still play here (we won't kick them just b/c you don't like them), but you don't have to put up with them. It's PERSONAL CHOICE. What we allow to be posted in FW fits within the guidelines set for the site. This information is all well-known; no one should be shocked to enter Flame Wars and read what they read.

Pretty metaphors are fun, but I think it'd help your cause a whole lot if you actually explained what it is that you're proposing. At the moment it just seems like you're having a whinge for the sake of whinging... I think we'd be a lot more receptive (and this discussion a lot more productive) if you outlined the precise changes that you're lobbying for.
