that brings me to 2 things i hate about nhl rules -- 1. blood on a high-stick gets you 4 min instead of 2 min with no blood 2. pass with the hand in defensive zone --- these should not be there as nhl rules, that and fight instigator

Tough call. There was a clear attempt to injure...but he missed. Can't suspend someone for failing. He should have got an unsportsmanlike in the game 9if he did then good). Part of me wishes he had connected, just so we could see if he would have been treated like the rest of the slugs in the NHL.

I don't have the NHL rulebook, but Hockey Canada rules are that an attempt to injure is a Match penalty. He could have received a Match penalty in any game under Hockey Canada rules...but it would be a ballsy (and good, IMHO) call by the ref. Any Match penalty carries a suspension.

Crosby out indefinitely with concussion-like symptoms

This really is not a good sign for his career. Most of you know I'm not a Crosby fan, but at the same time, there is no denying his importance to the league. There have been far too many players who have had their careers cut short by concussions. I sincerely hope this doesn't happen to Crosby. As a fan, I want to see my team beat the best, not benefit from injury. And Crosby being out because of injury hurts everyone.

Every concussion puts any player one step closer to retirement,
since the effects are generally cumulative. Depending on the
damage done it takes less punishment with future impacts to
result in the same injury... or worse.

Recovery time is unpredictable but tends to become elongated
with each occurrence.

While a helmet protects from a fractured skull, it can't do anything
about the grey matter bouncing around inside it.

Pat LaFontaine, Eric Lindros, and Paul Kariya are names that instantly come to mind. I hope Crosby won't be added to that list.

Just as gloves won't keep boxers brains from jumping around inside their head. It's another reason to why I prefer mma over boxing. You can take fewer hits to the head by a fist than a glove but the brain doesn't get more punishment per hit. So fist fighting results in fewer concussions. More noses and jaws gets broken but you seldom need to retire because of a broken nose. Gloves are basically tailor made to create brain damage.

Agreed. He is too important to the game of hockey, not just the NHL. I've suffered a number of concussions from hockey and other sports; my last one being about 3 years ago. Still feel the effects of the damn thing. And that one was from softball of all things.

I hope it's just extra precaution. As a Pens fan, this sucks majorly. Crosby has such a promising future.

It'd suck to see him have to retire early because of stupid cheap shots.

The NHL is extremely high risk now. They took out the ability for players to run any interference to protect their teammates. There doesn't seem to be an enforcer in the league who understands how to protect his teammates - partly because of the Instigator rule. The players don't know how to protect themselves anymore. And there doesn't seem to be any common sense or "respect" when it comes to players laying off in obviously dangerous situations to their opponents - probably because there isn't any worry that an enforcer will punch them out for it.

Not sure it is because of their ignorance on concussions, but rather it is easy to judge and be critical from behind the anonymity of a computer screen.

looks like he got 2 concussion when he was playing in the québec junior league for rimouski, plus the 2 in nhl --- not gonna help him, hopefully he'll be back soon

Coincidentally I'm going to NYC with my brothers, who are all Rangers fans, to see the Rangers/Flyers game on the 23rd. I hate the Flyers more than the Rangers, so I'll be cheering for the Rangers even though I'll be in my Penguin gear.

I was going to comment on this as well. Amazing to me how Quebec politicians have nothing better to do than to get involved in the NHL. Just like attempting to charge Chara with a crime for his hit on Max Pacioretty.

i'm from there and totally agree with that .... but imagine a french ( who can't speak english ) coaching new york rangers or detroit red wings ... i'm not sure you guys would like it either ... politics out of the sport

Couldn't disagree more. I could care less who coached my team. Or what language he spoke. The team has an obligation to hire the person they feel is best for their team. Language shouldn't have anything to do with it.

That being said I am a strong proponent of the French language (my kids are fully bilingual).

If I imagine a society where I had to fear for losing my mother tongue, I can begin to empathize with the French Canadians. I've felt a little pissed at them sometimes when a few of them talk about separating from the rest of Canada (prematurely, IMO), but I can understand how they are protective of their identity.

This got me thinking for a few seconds. It would be awesome if NHL teams were regional teams. So the players came from the area of the team. The Leafs and the Canadians would dominate.
