Social conservatives generally seem to balk at the notion of supporting gay marriage probably because they view marriage as an institution which is only legitimate if it is in accord with (their) tradition and/or with the Book (Torah, Quran, Bible). Untrue. http://www.sodomy.org/laws/ it's a bit out of date, because some of the laws are technically on the books but have been found by the courts to be unconstitutional. However, I know at least Alabama is still on the books and has not been challenged.
