WHAT A HORRIBLE MOVIE!

God, I grew up to that trilogy of books. I read each of them 3 or 4 times, loving every minute of it. In many ways these books meant more to me than either Chronicles of narnia or harry potter or lord of the rings.

AND THE DIRECTOR RUINED ALL OF IT.

pretty good actors, they were cast very well(except Lyra was a bit too annoying and bratty) and of course a widly imaginative plot. Along with great special effects and you'd assume this be a 4 out of 4 movie, hmm.

and, yet, somehow the director made all this into 100 minutes of pure bullshit. By the end of the movie, the jam-packed theatre I was in was positively screaming and booing about how horrible the movie was. The ending was by far the worst part, I won't give too much away, but its terribly horrible and cliche.

Anyone who says this movie was good has a bad taste in movies and should be disregarded immediatly.

He is imporatant, without him taking the throne, Lyra would have never met Iorek.
True, but in that thinking, EVERYTHING becomes important.

Then again, fate made it, because of the prophecy and such..Therefor, they were ment to met. So the character os iofur is less important. Still is, but compared to Iorek, especially if you look at the trilogy as a whole.

If you look at the whole trilogy Iofur does get shadowed, but since this is only the first book, he is important. And my logic does not make everything important, for example: the time they became drunk had no impact at all on the book.

I saw it this afternoon. And I was not impressed.
And I haven't even read the books yet.
T'was cliche-ridden, slow and full of stupid character names that I couldn't say, let alone pronounce.
However, the CGI was exceptionally great (Deamons especially) and the acting on the whole was good. Notable mentions go to Derek Jacobi, Daniel Craig and Sam Elliot (the latter having the best hair ever.)

New Line really need Peter Jackson back.

Of course it was messed up..But I still liked the fact it was adapted as a movie.

The ending was shitty, I agree.

And lyra is suppoed to be annoying, otherwise it wouldn't be Lyra.

I saw it last night and thought it was pretty good. The style is lovely, of course. As tends to happen with movies based on books, the storytelling is a little rushed and, at times, disjointed. But I thought it was good.

My partner thought it was "Awesome." In fact, he thought it was the "Awesomest" (though not necessarily the best) movie he's seen since Batman Begins.

It was Narnia but worse.

Speaking of Narnia, Prince Caspian is coming out in a few months as a movie, which was my favorite of the Narnia series

They were almost the last books to make me weep. Lee Scoresby and Hester's last stand... Lyra and Will at the very end... my god.

Why do people have to make such rubbish adaptations? Look at the way they screwed up Alan Moore's books. Watchmen is going to be dircted by Zack Snyder and he's going to RUIN it.

I liked the movie. I read the books but really don't remember them. It was a little cliche as some have said, but I think the action scenes made up for it. Yeah, I told my friend, an armored polal bear rips off another armored polar bears bottom jaw in the books. Did he believe me? Noooo. Sure, in the movie he more punched off his jaw but whatev. I thought it was cool. And riggable, you dont have to pop in eveytime someone says the liked the movie and insult them.

This wasn't meant to be a purely action movie. If thats the only good thing about it, then the director failed at transfering the book to the movie. I suggest you reread the books, and then see if you think the movie is good again. I could easily say this series of books is in my top 2 favorite series of books, and they really meant a lot to me as a young kid.

To go from having a horrible amount of devotion to the book as a younger kid, to feeling like this was the biggest let down of the year, doesn't even begin to explain how much of a failure the director was.
This honestly wasn't the actors fault. Nicole was a phenomenal choice to play ms. coulter, I was really impressed with this.
By itself, the polar bear fight was cool, to. The graphics were great.

But the thing is: in the book you really REALLY felt for all the characters in the plot. I fell in love with Lyra in the books, and in the movie she was just another bratty heroine. Iorek was the subject of all my sympathy by the time he gets to the fight, in the book. But, by the time that part of the plot in the movie rolled around, I couldn't care any less about any of the characters, so the fight didn't bring out any emotion in me.

Furthermore: His Dark Material's, the trilogy in which the Golden Compass is the first installement, is a wildy imaginative, un-cliche series. Phillip Paulman, went out of his way to make his books break cliches and create something truely new and refreshing. However, when a director takes something this wonderfully unique and turns it into another money-making, cliche, hollywood movie, and the only response you can have is "oh its ok, the ACTION makes up for the ruinning of the plot", then yes I am going to get upset. And yes, if you fail to realize this, I am going to insult you. Deal with it.

well obviously. I, for instance, enjoy the horrible movie "mighty ducks" along with "mighty ducks 2" and to cap it all off, most embarrisingly "mighty ducks 3"

you have every right to say I have a bad taste in movies, in fact i'm well aware that all those three belong in "top 100 worst movies of all time"

but so does the golden compass.

If you have the choice to say what movie should be good for someone else, you have bad tastes everywhere.

This serie is one of my favorite, and some of the only books I have ever read. I liked the movie, but it could have been MUCH better. Like I said, agreed on the ending.

But it was good anyway. Not excellent, but it was good.

By the sounds of it (from riggable), it sounds alot like Eragon. Great book, botched the movie horribly. Then again, relatively few book-based movies turn out well. The LOTR series was good (if lengthy), and Harry Potter films are slright (though the main stars look almost to old for their parts).

Noooo, I doubt even riggable would say that the Golden Compass was as bad as Eragon. That movie was soooo bad. Even if you don't compare it to the book, which was amazing.

I actually quite liked Eragon.
Robert Carlye does a decent job at playing a villain.
