... Pakistan is not ready for democracy. It's sad but it's true and who can deny it? Up to 48% of the population (according to many polls) supports Al Qaeda (sp?)... which means they support Islamic fundamentalism - a brand of religion that does not allow for the expression of opinions needed in a democracy.
... Granted, 48% is less than half, but it's damned close.
... Could all women vote in a Pakistani democracy? Hell no. That alone should prove the point.
... The best we (the US) can hope to accomplish is to remain on good terms with the local dictator so long as he assists us as needed during the war. Sure, it's ugly, but it's reality.

The Pakistani people were barely going to be in better hands with her than they were with Musharraf. Personally, I was hoping elections would proceed and a third-party canidate would be elected. I guess that possibility is gone now.
good point, she comes off as a hero for democracy, but she did help her country fall into military dictatorship in the first place.

its not that i agree or disagree with this notion, but i just finished natan sharanskys The case for democracy and he spends a fair amount of time arguing against this point. Im not really sure he did it all that effectively, but it has made me wonder a bit about the long term stablity of working with the locals.

Any source for the 48%?
I don't want to get uppity, because your posts are generally polite and well argued, but it seems rather far-fetched...

Did you know that if you use a statistic, 98% of the people won't question it?
I certainly did not... You learn something new every day...

I hope for Musharif to use nuclear weapons during the Civil War and for the US to intervene causing a domino effect resulting in a worldwide thermonuclear war.
