good point, she comes off as a hero for democracy, but she did help her country fall into military dictatorship in the first place.browng-08 wrote:Well, not to say that the assassination wasn't tragic, or that it won't have disasterous consequences or to support Musharraf in any way, but Bhutto was known for being a corrupt leader herself (albeit not a dictator). The Pakistani people were barely going to be in better hands with her than they were with Musharraf.
Personally, I was hoping elections would proceed and a third-party canidate would be elected. I guess that possibility is gone now.
its not that i agree or disagree with this notion, but i just finished natan sharanskys The case for democracy and he spends a fair amount of time arguing against this point. Im not really sure he did it all that effectively, but it has made me wonder a bit about the long term stablity of working with the locals.Nobunaga wrote:... Pakistan is not ready for democracy. ... Granted, 48% is less than half, but it's damned close.
... Could all women vote in a Pakistani democracy? Hell no. That alone should prove the point.
... The best we (the US) can hope to accomplish is to remain on good terms with the local dictator so long as he assists us as needed during the war. Sure, it's ugly, but it's reality.

I certainly did not... You learn something new every day...InkL0sed wrote:Statistics can be... untrustworthy.
Did you know that if you use a statistic, 98% of the people won't question it?
actually 65.3% of statistic are made up on the spot.radiojake wrote:over 72% of stats are made up, 65% of people can tell you that
