Yes, we did win the Cold War but this was despite Vietnam, not because of it. Aside from the protests at home, a big part of the reason we pulled out was because other cold war fronts, notably in Europe, were becoming dangerously thin on the US side. It is well known that the USSR had a huge advantage in terms of their conventional military but that the US had an advantage in terms of automic weaponry which ultimately won out.

What I was referring to when I said that Vietnam was where America went wrong was that this is what caused Americans to lose their patriatism. The distrust that the average American has with his government can be traced back to this period.

The average person thinks that it was the correct decision but has no idea of what the reprecussions of pulling out were, not only to the South Vietnamese, but also to neighboring countries. All political parties, and essentialy free speach, was banned in South Vietnam and the people who we had pledged to protect became victims of Northern torture, rape , oppression and murder. Not only that, but seeing as how the North Vietnamese didn't have the US to fight anymore they took it upon themselves to invade neighboring Cambodia in 1978 and to subject them to all of these same horrors.

I certainly did not know about those specific incidents. The only reason I even know abouth the Cambodian invasion is because I accidentaly stumbled accross an article on it in my school's archives while doing research for a geography class. It is something of extreme relevance with the debate over pulling out of Iraq and it is NOT being taught in schools.

Ironically the latest Rambo movie may give people a more acurate assessment of the morality of pulling out of Vietnam than most college professors.
