I can barely find mrs curl's car in a crowd, and have to look for the "I sponsored an animal at the zoo" sticker to tell it from all the other similar-looking vehicles. Or try and remember the numberplate.

I could read before starting kindergarten. My parents read to me and my siblings when we were really young. I'll always be impressed with my father for that. He'd often get home from work late, and even though we could often tell he was exhausted, he'd still always read us a story. Complete with voices and sound effects.

Plus, I have an older sister, and we've always been a bit competitive. So when she was reading at 6 and I was 4, well, I had to be just like her, and got to work.

So how often when she was younger did you read to your daughter, do you encourage her to read a wide variety of material to increase her general knowledge ?

You guys are missing the point. The point is our public schools suck. And instead of addressing it we just sit back and say, "Well, it's the parents responsibility to make sure their kids learn." If the public school system isn't doing their job, GIVE ME a school voucher so I can send them someplace that DOES their job. This is a lot more reasonable than expecting every parent in the free world to be able to make up for the ineptitude of the public school system.

I'm not sure, jay, that being ignorant of roman numerals is indicative of a failing in the school system.
I'm not saying the system is good (it seems passable in my locality, though I'd probably shift the emphasis somewhat - and I'd cetainly give them more intersting novels to read...has anybody else had Louis Lowry's The Giver inflicted upon them?), but to say it's not good you need other evidence. You might as well bemoan that they don't teach the kids classical greek any more.

NO, but it is my responsibility to check LONG before he is ever eligible for that diploma that he is progressing well enough. AND, to either get him the additional assistance he needs (if the failing is specific to him) OR, if the problem is more general to rally the communitee to stand before the principal, the school board and make sure that the system improves. This might include volunteering to tutor, volunteering directly in the school or any number of issues.

When the film 'The Madness of King George' was made it was originally called 'The madness of King George III'. The distributors decided to change the title because they said American audiences wouldn't go and see it because they hadnt seen 'I' and 'II'.

I dont know if it is true, or what it says about the use of roman numerals, but I find amusing.

No, it isn't. All you are doing then is trying to publically fund private schools.

If you don't like the public school system WORK FOR CHANGE. And .. I answered the rest earlier.

First, trying to say your child not knowing Roman numerals means the public schools suck is just dumb, for a lot of reasons (she might have forgotten them or ignored the lesson, it might have been dropped in favor of more important stuff legitimately. etc.) Second, even if it did show YOUR school sucked, the "public schools" don't universally "suck" SOME do ... and while some improved under Bush, many of the better ones now have strangleholds upon them, because Bush was all about rote learning and memorization ... like Texas and not free thinking and creativity.

(and please note I am very far from happy with my son's school... and part of my frustration is that I DO KNOW many much better public schools).
