That image of Richard Wright bears a striking resemblance to Leon Russell.

If Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd got in a fight, this is how it would go down:

First, Zeppelin would quote Lord of the Rings in an attempt to appear culturally relevant, while shaking their long, luxurious locks of feminine hair. Pink Floyd would blast them in the eyes with lasers and the sheer power of ethereal rock awesomitude.

Zeppelin would try to play someone else's song in response, passing it off as their own, would fail miserably, as they have in life, and Pink Floyd would win easily.

I can actually see the laser part happening.

I don't think badly of Zeppelin. They've made a lot of good music I just like Pink Floyd better.

Pink Floyd were a great band.

I was more a cantebury groups type listener. Albums such as 'In the Land of Grey and Pink' by Caravan, 'Golf Girl' was a particular favourite....however, I was completely spaced out and off my trolley at the time so it's hardly surprising. This thread made me go up into the loft and check...and there they were, all the old vinyl LPs including the one mentioned and load of others gathering dust....on reflection I really cannot understand why I bought them.

I'm trying to get hold of Kevin Ayer's latest album - it is apparently pretty good, unlike some of the stuff he did after his heyday (this comment prompted by the fact that he was of course part of the Canterbury lot, and was in fact originally with Soft Machine, though he tended to be more tuneful and jolly than that). I remeber listening to "grey and pink" and thinking it was good, but for the life of me I couldn'#t tell you what it was like.

Soft machine were great!! I love them. well.. until wyatt left..

Some of the stuff Gong did was pretty ok too, although sometimes when I listen to them I suspect they played music in order to have a valid reason for doing drugs!

I saw Gong several times.
Once they were on a bill with Kevin Ayers, Kevin Coyne, Nico, and a few others, in a free concert in Hyde Park. Magic.

You're not far wrong there.

The Mother of an old school friend knew this crowd very well. When I went and stayed with them it was not uncommon for a few of them to be there. I think we all heard Matching Mole before an unsuspecting public. (My friends Mother had a Manor House, servants and all, she also had recording studios at the run of cottages she owned behind the main house.)

It was a somewhat bizarre sight when we would all sit down to dinner with people waiting on us, and across the table would be a few of these guys and their girlfirends/wives, often spliffing up between courses.

I think Wyatts influence spread as far as the likes of Tangerine Dream.

I still love Matching Mole.
Or most of it amnyhow.
It was called "Matching Mole" as a sort of pun - "Soft Machine" in French is "Machine Moule"

this is the first verse.. the first verse.. first ..the first verse
and this is the chorus.. or perhaps it´s a bridge.. or just another part of this song.. that I´m singing..
this is the second verse..second verse.. it could be the last.. verse
this is the second verse.. it´s probably the last one
and this is the chorus etc.. or just another key.. change.

never mind.. it doesn´t hurt.. it only goes to show.. I´ve lost faith in this song
cause it wont help me.. retune

one of the best lyrics ever.. I don´t have the second album.
(oh Fripp and Eno and only 10$ on amazon so I guess I have to order it now!)

nope.. we´re still talking english progressive, and besides that, soft machine were friends of pink floyd and used to be their opening act..and they played on the first Barrett solo album.
..and when robert wyatt broke his spine pink floyd did benefit concerts for him
and he used nick mason as a replacement for himself and as producer when he came back to music.

There´s no other band more closely connected to the Floyd imo..

and I am you and what I see is me.
And do I take you by the hand and lead you through the land
you'll help me understand the best I can.
