I walk around smiling at people all the time, and all I get are frowns. Is it that I'm ugly?

Is it a maniacal grin? That would do it...
On rare occasion yes, but most of the time it's just a friendly smile.

Karma: what goes around comes around.
If only real life were like that.
No, karma is you will get what comes in a future life. I am talking reality, now.
Walk around smiling at everyone, being polite no matter what, for a day. (not saying you don't already) See how they respond.
Next walk around frowing, being grumpy and see how everyone responds.

see i have a problem with this. in certain neighbourhoods around the world, if you walk about smiling and being polite more often than not it will lead to a good kicking and being mugged.

Really? Which neighbourhoods round the world? I've lived in many neighbourhoods round the world and only been mugged once, in Manila, and I didn't even live there. I've even smiled in Central London and not got kicked. I'd venture that 99.99% of the neighbourhoods round the world are fine to smile in. I bet you can't name more than 5 you can't without checking on google or watching Gangs.

Central London is not very dodgy, just got to look out for Eastern European pick-pocket gangs.
i could name five in the northwest. it's not the full neighbourhoods, just certain estates. if you're a stranger walking through certain estates, then be very careful.

Smiling is okay!
If you are unfamiliar with an area, DON'T go in there, unless you have a trusted local to advise you. Wandering around in an unknown neighborhood, rubbernecking, is the true idiot act.

Friday night dates always lead to some very potent sex.
