Although there are a couple of space maps in play already, there isn't anything that directly replicates a space battle.

I think that with 8 ships the idea gets a bit cluttered and lost - the two ships idea that you started with seemed to have a bit more potential, although you could do with adding more territories to it. Think of it something like the Arms Race map, where you have to try and take control of a single fleet, before warping across space to battle with the enemy - that sort of thing inspires me a bit more, and has an easier backstory to grasp with and make the game more interesting.

edit: It's always worth checking out other suggestions first, as there is a very similar idea by Spaceburger that was posted aa couple of days prior to yours - it might be worth speaking with each other and seeing if you want to team up??

Since we seem to have a similar tilt on what a space battle should look like, here's my two cents.
1) 8 ships is too many, and historically most conquest maps top out at 6 (AoR, Feudal).
2) Since this is a space battle, there should be no such thing as a "fighter zone", there should be "fighters" everywhere, surrounding the bigger ships.

you don't need to be that technically detailed. in theory you'd have to punch through a fighter screen before you could attack the capital ships anyways, so it makes sense in a way that all the attack routes to the 'Carriers' go through the fighter melee.

my suggestion would be to maybe expand the number of territories in the 'Fighter Zone', and add a path-way of territories leading from it to the hangar. Then i would make the 'Frigates' be able to bombard the paths in and out of the 'Fighter Zone', and vice versa, and then the Frigates vulnerable to conquest only from attack routes leading off the 'Carrier' they protect.

that way each player would have to get his 'Fighter' from his 'Carrier', through the 'Dogfight', and then to the 'Hangar' of the opposing 'Carrier'. you'd get an auto-deploy inside the Hangars and the Frigates, and probably an attrition rate inside the 'Dogfight' so nobody could get a stranglehold on the center of the map.

as a 'Battlefront' addict, i think that system would give you the same kind of feel to this map, where you'd have to keep an eye on both offense and defense the whole time. anyways, that's just my take on it and i hope some of it was at least helpful.

that system might also work for a ww2-Era carrier fleet battle map, if the graphics for a space theme can't be worked out.
