I liked the Europa Universalis idea. But the first two versions just seemed ugly-buggy so I gave up on them. Never was able to play far enough into any scenario. And as I've always tried to maintain a pretty up-to-date system, I'm pretty sure it wasn't the power of my system causing the problem.

You need to get DosBox to run it, but it works great.
I got it to run directly under WinXP, I don't think I even had to activate that compatibility mode.

Ah, weird, most of the games from that site require it. Well then, Stroop, you've got no excuse.

Word for Civilisation series and Total war. Also to those talking about how nothing even rivals Total war series scope-Civilisation does.

They're two excellent series, with different takes on the same concept. While in Civilisation you won't find the combat of total war, you will find much more freedom and choice concerning your government, tech, buildings etc.

And Civ stretches for 6000 years.

But both games are amazing.

Still had a DosBox installed for Z, but Netstorm simply runs under XP indeed. Played through the tutorial and the first mission now and liking every second of it :)

Try Victoria or hearts of iron II. Same developer, different time period.

I have:
Age of Empires I, II and III
Rise of Nations (gold edition)
Age of Mythology (gold edition)
Civilisation IV
Empire Earth II

I like Rise of Nations the most, from sticks and stones to stealth and nukes with alot of civs to chose and the campain is nice.
Age of Mythology is good game if u like mythology, pretty basic game only with myth units and godpowers
Age of Empire III looks cool but qua gameplay i like II better
for Civilisation, is a good game but i dont like the interface, same as in Empire Earth

Did you use to run games as well, or "only" play them?

I've done both, but I far prefer being a player. Too much work being a DM! <grin>

More like "looking for DM who'll get off his arse".

I tried once, but did not get very far (probably because I tried being dungeon master before I even played one game -- and played with experienced people to boot! ). Mostly I just played. One of my neighbors had a couple of games going for a while. Then I got back to school.. and just did not have the time. When I did have the time, it seemed to have been a fad that largely went away.

Warning to those wishing to get Empire: Total War.

Don't. Not until all the patches come out (and that's going to be awhile). If you do get it, you may get extremely frustrated and never trust the TW series again, as I've seen on their forums.

I have it, but do not play it, just because it's really repetitive (who would ever of said that about previous TW games?), and it's still amazingly buggy.

As for strategy games - HOI 2! Wooo!

I second the HOI 2! Just reinstalled it.

I will also say that I enjoyed Empire Total War for about two days, until it started getting very repetitive. There's really no difference in playing as the Prussians, the Turks, or the English; in other words, there's no historical ambiance that I've come to expect from those games.

I was actually just about to get Empire, but now I'm worried. What sort of bugs are we talking about, exactly?

I didnt' find it buggy. I found it disappointing, extremely repetitive, and very very easy.

Well, people have complained about some bugs. Some were fixed in previous patch, and I hope more will be fixed in the next patch (should be coming out soon)

- CTD's (like clicking on a ship (should be fixed soon), as well as a whole heap of others)
- Multiplayer CTD's and "Cannot Connect To Host" (my absolute favourite)
- Depending on settings and your rig, frame rates and loading times with the AI Turns (to be honest, I expected as much seeming there are so many factions)
- Like previous TW games, allies attack you. However, this only came out with the recent patch and so should be fixed with the next patch.
- Battle AI seem to do a total "charge" formation, into itself. Only came around with previous patch, should be fixed soon.

And yes, as TheGreekDog stated, repetition 101. Luckily CA have promised with their next patch there will be a whole heap of different stats and skins for each faction. Let's hope it works. As for the Easy part, it can be. With the new finance rule in the Hard and Very Hard settings, you have to limit yourself extremely (and insofar, people that cheated in past games are the only ones seeming to be worried about this, and they don't know how to really play a strategy game).

If you're up to it, I suggest you buy it. The new campaign map and everything in it is still wonderful. However, the score Metascore gave ETW is not what it should be, but what it can be once it is fully patched.

EDIT: Forgot to add, go Here (clicky) to find out more if you want to get ETW or not. Note: Those complaining are those minority were the game does not totally work. Also, check "The Daily Updates", which is giving me more hope for the game.

Thanks to both Skittles and GreekDog. I'll definitely hold out for the next patch, at the very least. Seriously though, it seems so strange to me that even after learning from the (sometimes minor) mistakes of the four previous TW games we're still dealing with being in a constant state of war with every one of your neighbors. I mean, come on, tone it down just a bit.
