Indeed. The benefit I get from participating in a political thread is that, even if someone says "they're going to kill grandma," I then have the motivation to actually do research to find that they actually aren't. I might not be educating whoever started the discussion, but I do come away feeling more educated. That's one of the reasons why I participate.
