During World War I, Newfoundland was a territory of England and carried the English flag. Newfoundland did not join confederation (Canada) until 1949. Yes they went to war with England, they were forced just as Canada was at that time.

Blame the English Royal Parliament for the participation of Canada and Newfoundland during World War I, I do. Fucking English pig taskmasters and their damned tea and crumpets.

There is a book about the Newfoundland seal hunt called Death on the Ice. If you ever see it, buy it and read it. Amazing story/tragedy.

Alliances, mostly. Then you have Russia and Turkey just basically hating each other and seeing a good reason to take another shot.

They used to hunt Russians and Turks on the Newfoundland seal hunt, but that was declared inhumane and they had to restrict it to just seals again.
