Hmm I think the map is too much ahead in the development stage to make those changes. It would be a totally new map then.

However I know what you mean. Perhaps someone will do an historical map of Italy in a specific age in the future. Medieval Italy would be interesting as well as an ancient Italy when Roma was just a city state and it had not conquered its neighbours yet.

Why is there a small river between Lombardia and Veneto? It doesn't appear to serve any purpose since it doesn't block any borders.

  • Changed "North" to "Nord" on both maps
  • Changed "Number of cities occupied" to "Il numero di citta occupate" on both maps
  • Increased the font size on the small map "Il numero di citta occupate" so it is easier to read
  • Moved "Created by RJBeals" from the vertical right side to the horizontal bottom on both maps
  • Changed "TIROLO" to "ALTO ADIGE" on both maps
  • Moved "TOSCANA OVEST" over a bit so the name was not falling on the border.


Also I tried moving the army numbers on top of the Pantelleria but I just couldn't get it to work without resizing the island. It was getting too big and just didn't look good. Sorry.

romolo_augustolo gave some suggestions but they were all to graphical for this point in the map. An italian map with the tower of Pisa or Roman monuments would be cool - but it would not fit the style of this map. Also the orinitation was rotated a bit so the map would not be so wide. Thats why the compass was added (per somebodys suggestion) to show true north.

Just trying to be true to the Italian Landscape. It was requested there (I think by Lupo) since it was a major lake in Italy.

Okay - thats fixed now. I'm not going to post the whole xml images over again - but it's fixed on the maps. You can view the actual maps with the links below if you want to see them as a whole without xml armies on them.

I'm not sure if it's been said, but you should make th cites start off as neutral.

Hmm... I don't know how to do that. Is that part of the new xml release? Also - I have 48 countries so that may throw the starting countries out of whack. Anyone else think this is worth looking at?

Yes.

Even if you need to cut up some spaces elsewhere to do it. You shouldn't start with a continent and therefore you shouldn't start with a Bonus Space either. If you happen to own 2 or 3 spaces next to another City you can have a bonus on the second turn without really having to work for it.

Either that or add a sixth City, say split Rome into The Vatican & Rome but that isn't a good fix either.

I just don't know. It would be a lot of work to split up countries now. I'll wait for a little more feedback.

Personally I would like the map to remain the way it is. Not every new map has to take advantage of the new XML features.

while i agree with the cities starting neutral i don't agree with adding more terits. just make the cities neutral to avoid people starting with lucky bonuses

Yeah but then we start with 43 active countries. That's a horrible number to start with. I planned the whole map around 48 just because that is the best number to start with so there is the fewest neutral countries. I think somewhere in this thread it was discussed about not having the bonuses - but then it was stated that it's all a matter of chance anyway. You may be the one who starts with 3 capitols - or may not. it kind of adds to the fun.

I would really hate to change the xml, or start with 43 active countries.

43. oh that's bad. it's a prime number :(

i had the impression it would have been 45 if the cities are neutral. 45 would have been a decent number perfect for 3 and 5 and with just 1 neutral in 4 and 3 neutrals for 6 players.

but 43 is really bad. forget about the neutral cities then.

Not worth it at this stage. Leave it as it is. Only new maps that are starting from scratch can truly benefit from the new XML changes because you cannot add them as an afterthought. It would ruin the map. Leave it as it is mate.

On a side note...I nearly missed the map in this sub forum. I thought that although the final forge maps were added in this section to group them together the thread would still be visible in the general section. Apparently this is not so?

Unfortunately not, Ruben. But with them all centralized here, people learn to come here for maps that nearing the end.

Regarding the issue with the cities, I don't think they need to start neutral. Sometimes having a small luck factor can be fun on maps. I don't think it is overly imbalanced by any means, but not having them start neutral.

Andy - I went back and read the "how to" thread at the top of the foundry forum and noticed this statement:

Regarding the use of language on the map, if the map is detailing a specific geographic area or region where a particular native language is frequent in use, it may be used in place of English. Regarding larger or less specific areas, this must be done in English. All descriptions of gameplay on the map also must be in English.


Does this mean that my legend note, "Number of cities held" should be in English instead of Italian? or is it clear enough in Italian to be understood? Thanks.

Also - curious but once the map is final, does it go through a live testing with real people before it's placed into the main site for general use? Using the xml tools, it looks like it's all correct, but I would imagine a glitch may not show up until somebody actually plays. Thanks.

I think that it gives the map more gravitas by being in italian and would even go as far as to suggest that you should change the created by rjbeals to the equivalent in italian in order to keep the theme up. You have to be an idiot if you don't understand what the italian means in english

Thanks for reminding me about this, I was going to post something about this a day or two ago when I saw some discussion.

I do like the use of italian, as it's only fitting for such a map. But I'm afraid the "Number of cities held" might be pushing the boundaries of clarity for everyone. The same could be said about the impassable borders, but for the most part people generally understand impassable borders, but as the cities is a less general and more unique feature, I might go with it in english.

Unfortunately we do not have another means of live testing at the moment, other than putting the map up for normal live play. So I hope you get most of the kinks worked out beforehand! If there are any, you can just let either lack or I know, and we'll get the fixed versions up for play.

Also - I don't think there are any issues with the code, I took my time with it & tested each country with the attack lines tool, just wanted to be sure.
