hehe. I think I'd use that as much as possible, if only to allow me to nudge my fellow designers at the salsa party, going "y'know what kind of brush I used for that bit there?" ;)

Looks all pretty good, I think. :) Did you put the signature between the seal the bear as a separator or sorts? I kind of like signatures shrunken in corners.

Pretty much. I tried putting it in the actual seal first but that didn't work so good.

I think the font you used for our sigs looks a bit awkward given the other fonts on the map. Maybe try the same font as Hollywood (to integrate the font more) or use the "Cities" font (to with something along similar lines).

love those mountains

i think the only thing that bugs me is the hard state border line of eastern Cali. The map looks like watercolor, and normally you don't have those hard lines in watercolors. I think it would look better if you didn't have a "floating" state, and instead had a muted natural map bordering it. I understand that it's a bit late to do that, just thought I would suggest it.

similar to this technique:

otherwise, love the map. nice work.

Originally I had it attached to the main land in that fashion, but I don't think it looked very good so I removed it. It's just a lot of blank space and since the shape of Cali is so close to both the top and bottom of the image it doesn't create much of a shape anyway. Also, I want to emphasize California as it's own entity and not just as part of a larger whole.

Just curious -- How long does it normally take for a map to "graduate" to the Final Forge? And who decides when it's ready?

It varies, but usually along the lines of months (potentially weeks, if you mean from the start of the Graphics Workshop).

The Boys in Blue, namely: Industrial Helix, RedBaron0, and isaiah40, when it comes to the Graphics Workshop ;)

Small changes to the Legend and signature, as well as minute touch ups to the map itself.

I think I'm starting to like this map... plus your comment on my sketchblog helped ;)

I don't believe I ever received your opinion on possibly desaturating the colors some.

And one thing really bugs me, the red in LA right where it touches the regional border, seems too blown out by contrast, mainly just the right hand side.

And the color on Mojave Desert seems off in the legend and doesn't match the region... it could be lighter.

I adjusted it in this version, but only on the right. What do you think?

I think for California it's best to embrace the colors. I've actually bumped up the main map's colors in this version.

Oops I meant to hit that this version. I'll do that later today.

Whatever you did to the line is better. I think that whole line has problems because you see it over in Mojave as well. It's like you altered the hue and saturation of the black line itself... you know the effect I'm talking about?

As for embracing color, I agree. But some of your colors are looking blown out. Mainly the central valley area and LA... what happened to the left side?

Looking good. Hope this can move on soon.

Still wish you could work in Salton Sea somehow though - just doesn't seem like California without it.

While you're at it, maybe you could also draw in the California portion of Lake Tahoe, and lower the name ("Lake Tahoe") a bit to make room.

Look, Lakes and Sea's (apparently the Salton Sea is a salt water sea proper, pretty cool)
