Umm...just a minor quibble. But the guy saying "asshole" IS directing it at them.

A) the guy could have Tourrette's
B) the guy could be thinking of someone else when saying "asshole" (like, whoever put the filing cabinets in the hallway)
C) the guy could honestly be calling the passerby an asshole for walking down the hall (which is really kind of funny).

At any rate, if you want to read more about that particular study, I read about it in Malcolm Gladwell's Blink, which is quite easy to find in any public library. It's not only a quick read, but quite fascinating.

That doesn't mean anything. Discrimination in Islamic countries is worse than that in the US, and there could be several reasons why it is smaller.

Really though, compared to Europe, youguys are way behind on accepting atheism... or homosexuality for that matter.
Because I grew up to Dutch standards, I see such intolerance as a bad thing.

I would have loved to go to high school in the Netherlands then, or even college, as here, I actually have to to sites, read books, etc. to have reliable resources. Or at least follow the links that wiki has. I take only general info from there, like if I can't remember a certain name or something. On a site where anyone can edit almost any article, it is best not to take it as fact unless you can back it up with a reliable resource.

I dislike the growing attitudes of entitlement and lack of responsibility. It's always either someone else's fault or we're owed something. Get your ass to work if you really want something, don't act like you deserve for someone else to give it to you.

I also dislike the atmosphere of political correctness. You do not have a right to not be offended. Stop removing Christian customs just because an activist feels uncomfortable. Get over yourself and grow some thicker skin. If a manger gets you upset, I'm curious to see what happens when someone actually criticizes you.

"Honor culture." That's a new concept for a Southern Gentlemen like me, please expand on that one.

Yeah, see, that's exactly what I'm talking about. "Dem's fightin words." It's all so retarded. There was a psychological study done about this, wherein undergrad students were sent from one room to another, and had to walk down a hall to get there. On the way, a grad student (in on the study) would be trying to get files out of a filing cabinet that was also in the hallway. But the area was too narrow, and so to get by, the guy looking for files would have to close the drawer and get out of the way.

As the undergrad passed, the guy looking for files, who made clear the entire time the person was coming down the hall that he was having a bad day with his body language and muttering, would get out of the way and say "asshole", as the person passed.

The southerners (especially the ones from Appalachia -- where, remember, the Hatfields and McCoys happened, along with way more blood feuds per capita than any other region on this continent -- seriously, look it up. There's something about living in the hills...) would all get incredibly upset (as measured by blood pressure and heart rate upon reaching their destination), whereas the northerners would actually be calmed by it. Many arrived at the destination laughing.

The point is, we in the north recognize the situation for what it is, someone having a bad day and allowing it to manifest the wrong way. We laugh at them for being so ridiculous. Or else we're relieved that the crazy person in the hallway stopped at saying "asshole" and didn't flip out some other way (because, after all, we've seen it all).

I'd say that you've just engaged in a gross over-generalization of northerners and southerners. Even those two terms are very broad, and it really depends on where you're from,and whether or not you're from a city of a certain size as well. Many factors contribute to one's reactions in that situation other than just being a "northerner" or a "southerner."

I've never been to any Appalachian town, so I've no idea how they are there, but now I know what you mean by "honor culture" in that sense.

I said, "Dem's fightin' words" because to me that represents a certain group within the south that would say that, so I like to mimic that accent every now and then for my own personal pleasure. When you refer to that phrase, you're not really referring to southerners in general--just a certain stereotype of a type of person that's commonly found in the south.

EDIT: To be very straight to point, if you're trying to say something like "I don't like hicks," then I could see what you're getting at (but that's pretty mean, isn't it?)

Agreed. Look at civil lawsuits in general, and you'll see that many people have this attitude of self-entitlement yet completely disregard their own responsibility in the case.

How many European countries have legalized gay marriage? Norway, Sweden, Netherlands, Belgium, and Spain. Any more?

I don't care too much for Catholicism or Christianity in general, but atheism isn't all that great either--not really something worth boasting about in my opinion (neither is boasting about being a CHRISTIAN nation).

Ok, I'll hold my tongue on your history and other things, but I'll give ya this:

The United States wasn't too hated 50 years ago. Maybe even 30 years ago, but as you can see--especially after the fall of the SU (Soviet Union)--we've become more involved and more entangled in other country's internal affairs, and it's been pissing off the world. We can already dominate anyone who tries to threaten us, but instead we've chosen to take it one step further and be the world police, the bully, or the modern day imperialist. That's why, in my humble opinion, many people dislike America. This is what causes the hate, the anti-American sentiment, and what fuels most terrorism directed towards us. We're suppose to be this country of freedom, liberty, and what have you, but people watch what we do, and they remember; whereas, Americans in general have the attention span of gnat, which only compounds the problems.

It's not our status as a "SUPERPOWER" that causes the dislike, it's what we've been doing with our power that causes the dislike, the hate, the Anti-American sentiments.

I'm usually quite short with what I have to say because I don't need a wall of text to get my point across. If I can point out that someone is being excessively supportive of his country to the point that one wonders that he might only hold those opinions because it is his country in four words, then I will use four words. If I need to clarify then I will.

Besides, when I'm posting on CC I am almost always doing something else at the same time. My posts are mostly just comments on how I feel about something as I browse through, although I will occasionally argue something if I'm in the mood. One can not look solely at post length when considering the legitimacy of someone's opinion.
