When I was young the age of first sexual (non-solo) activity was well-established as 16. Today it is 14. That demostrates a huge shift in the acceptance of sexuality. It wouldn't be particularly dramatic if it shifted from 63 to 65, but a shift from 16 to 14 is two of the five supersexed high-school years, when everyone is churning and writhing on the dance floor, and I find it very, very unlikely that someone would have fewer than 7 sex partners if they started in Grade 9 instead of Grade 11.

I would expect that total to be higher now. Girls are turning into guys in that they can sleep around more and not care... I've slept with a few girls who I would put in that category. Studies that have been cited in the Telegraph and on wikipedia give much higher numbers; unfortunately I can't get access to the original source material for them. Those other studies do usually give the mean, which I suspect is our main divergence of opinion here, rather than the nationality of origin.

The mean is a very poor choice for this statistic, because this is not going to be normally distributed: the people who are promiscuous are going to be very promiscuous, like having sex with 50 partners, whereas the people who are abstinent can only bring the number down from 7 to 0. The median gives a good sense of what the typical person will have done, without giving undue weight to the people Duk is friends with.
