1) Yep, lines would be easier than wasting space with words

2) Also agree about the bonuses: South Central and Interior should be worth 4 each at the very most - don't know where you got 6 from.

3) Can you think of any names better than South Central? It just sounds very awkward

Other than that, this map is looking brilliant for being so early in the development stage - it should be moved to the main foundry forum

1) Ok, I'll add the lines and delete the words.

2) The bonuses were like that before I added mountains, I will change them too.

3) On all the maps I've looked at, that region is called "South Central". If you know of something better then tell me.

Also, how do you get a thread moved to the main foundry forum?

don't worry about that. It'll happen when Andy gets around to it. Not a big deal.

as for the map, I'm wondering if you're going to add any territories and/or change the zoom? I think you were considering upping the count to 36? right now it's 31 and that's quite an odd number

by lanyards
hmm.. either 32 or 36. I'll try to fit 36 since it is divisable by more numbers.

That's actually what the region is called. I think it's fine since it's geographically correct.

You should probably split Palmer in half, and name the bottom Anchorage. The current location of Anchorage just isn't correct. You could rename the old Anchorage territory "Homer", "Seward", "Soldotna", or "Kenai".

The bonuses don't seem quite right, but I don't know how bonuses are usually figured out so I'll let someone else comment on that.

Bonuses are usually figured out with some formula that i can't remember, but hopefully someone can post it.

Fair enough then - I'm not too familiar with Alaskan geography

The writing on the legend could be easyer to read, (especially with the small map) nothing major but i'd get rid of the text shadow.

Anyways, love the map

I think interior should be worth 4 5 is too many

also if people want more territories, you can add something like a little bit of Russia or a little Canada.

i wouldn't cause Alaska is cool enough by itself

Russia can connect to the Aleutian islands and another point like northern Alaska.

maybe a 5 territory Russia continent with 2 points to defend make it worth 3

also southwest needs to be like 7 or u could give Gambel to the far north

i also like purple territory to be 5......just i few more things and this map will be done. It's progressing really fast

Whats the offical formula for figuring out the bonuses??

Posted: Thu Jul 12, 2007 12:44 pm
by fohr_fun
im not sure if there is an actual formula but the one i use to create maps is this

add up territories u must defend (boarder other countries) plus 1/3 the other territories that make up the continent

round base on map placement (usually down)

for example

aleutian islands 2 borders to defend plus 1 for other territories.

round down because its on edge of map its bonus is 3

take the classic map for example

NA has 3 territories to defend its interior has 6 territories

3 + 1/3 of 6 is 2 2+3 is 5

oceana in classic map 1 boarder to defend plus 3 other territories

1+1/3 of 3 is 1 1+1 =2

europe: 4 boarders to defend 4 interior

4+ 1/3 of 4 = 5 and 1/3 round down to 5

This formula seems to work for MOST of the maps out there

i think its a great formula

thats # of boundries to defend plus 1/3 of other territories rounded base on map placement

so i could argue interior should be 3 but ill give u 4 cause its near the middle of the map

remember this 1 works for most territories

some of the largest territories u can give an extra little something cause a incentive to go for it

IF YOU CAN'T DECIDE HOW TO ROUND. THE BEST WAY TO SOLVE THIS IS TO LOOK AT HOW EASY IT IS TO EXPAND

if its hard to expand from the territory round up

if its easy round down

but it looks like u have the bonuses about accurate. you round up for territories in the middle since its hard to expand and down for territories on the end since its easier

There's a more complicated forumla out there, don't remember what it is though.

The general look of this map is pretty decent, but I feel that perhaps there is some room for improvement.

Borders - these are all rather thick and clumsy, I would suggest dropping the thickness to only one or two pixels thick. Perhaps one pixel for the territory borders and two pixels for the continent borders. Obviously you can go thicker if you like, but once you start getting around the four pixel mark the map starts to suffer.

Sea Connections - I'd perhaps consider an alternative here. They don't really represent sea connections to me, rather long thick wires or something similar.

Dead Territory - This is a matter of personal preference, but I find maps generally look better with dead territory included. It helps bring geographical accuracy and familiarity to a map, rather than being presented with a floating island in the shape of a state in this instance.

Background - I guess this ties into the inclusion of dead territory. If you went that way you would need to work on a sea texture as well. Otherwise, I'm assuming the current background is the Alaskan flag, which is fine, but perhaps tone it down a bit as I feel it distracts from the map.

Other things to consider. While I like the colours of the territories, your texture may be a bit too strong. Maybe tone that down or look for alternative textures. The title and legend serve their purpose, but are a little bland. You might like to try and liven them up a little bit.

I'm not overly fond of the mountains. The effect is okay, they just don't seem to sit with the map properly. Experimenting with other effects or styles might lead to better results. I also think you have enough room on the right-side of your map to move the legend up and include the impassable's there as well.

The map shows good promise, you've done an excellent job so far. Keep up the good work.

I agree with KEYOGI about the mountains, and I think that you could add more territories. Maybe you could add some of Russia across the Bering Strait where "Alaska by lanyards" is and/or have part of the Yukon Territory on Alaska's eastern border. In order to do that, maybe you could make the impassable borders box a bit smaller or enlarge the size of the whole map.
Just some suggestions.

Thanks KEYOGI for the advice. :)

Also, maybe you could add snow capped peaks to the mountains, to add to the effect.

Haines?

I live in Skagway and was wondering why Haines (having no importance)
is in the map and not Skagway(Skaguay). Skagway is the begging of the White pass & Yukon route. even if not Skagway then perhaps Dyea the begging of the Chillkoot Trail!!!!

I suggest you change Haines to Skagway
other then that i love the idea of an Alaska Map

I get this for bonusses:

Code: Select all

Bonus   Continent
3   Far North
6   Southwest
3   Interior
4   Southcentral
2   Panhandle
3   Aleutians

the map is very nice
