I'd rather protest gentrification than defend (or be) nazis. Seems like the relative shittiness is massively disparate. There are plenty of reasons for moderately well off people who evem live in the gentrifying area to protest. The unavailability of affordable housing affects everyone except top earners, since the incentive for builders is to cater to those top owners and nobody else. And the market, amongst its many other failings, isn't correcting for that. So if you want to live near where you work, you move into the only areas you can afford, which are areas now pricing out poorer people. But sure, socialists are the ones who are politically unaware.

Areas that end up being 'gentrified' are often areas that would be shit holes if they had never been re-developed. I used to like in the London Docklands and remember my barber* telling me that back in the 80s and the 90s the whole area was a dead ghost town, then it suddenly rejuvenated after people working in Canary Wharf and the City started moving in. Ditto Shoreditch - now it's hipsterville but back when my mum was growing up in London, Shoreditch was just a gross post-industrial area with not much in it.

Granted the local authorities need to be putting more effort into ensuring there's social and subsidised housing available for the lower-paid workers being priced out of living anywhere at all central, but telling better-paid people they're not allowed to move in isn't the solution.

the incentive for builders is to cater to those top owners and nobody else. And the market, amongst its many other failings, isn't correcting for that.

You never know. I heard someone saying that developing plots of land with houses/apartments designed to be bought using part ownership is actually starting to interest venture capitalists, investment banks etc. on account of the fact that those sort of schemes are in at least as much demand as traditional 100% ownership real estate. Maybe a part ownership boom is in the offing.

London's real problem is that you can't throw a stone without hitting some really old three-story building that no one's allowed to knock down and replace with a tower block because it's old and Londoners like old things. Every time someone tries to build a big new tower block anywhere in London they immediately run into fierce opposition from old farts who wish the world was still the same as it was in 1970. It's tragic. If all those old areas were bulldozed and replaced with high rises you could fit 10 times as many people into the same areas, and everyone would be able to afford a reasonable place to live.

You can say 'oh but those buildings are our heritage and we like to preserve our heritage', but if you do then you have to accept that the trade off you're making is that almost everyone will have no choice but to cram themselves in to tiny rooms in those old buildings because those buildings were designed for a city with a far smaller population than London in 2018. London's population has grown by about 30-35% since the 1980s. Where are all those extra people supposed to live?

I'd already written this before you posted about Nazis so I'm going to post it anyway.

That's cool. I saw that you posted while I was typing and decided i don't have any major qualms with that and just ignored it lol. Like, housing activism is boring as f*ck to me, so I leave that to other people. There are issues and real difficult questions about what to do with old buildings and how to handle low income residential areas and these "shitholes" where real people live and have lives. It's important, but not as easy or fun as calling out these fucking nazis. Not that yelling online is activism either.

It's funny that you mention that you post it "to show what we are not informed of," when the videos are 80% rips of well known documentaries and Canadian drama series, and the rest is just poorly rammed in text crawls which lift actual nazi propaganda and present it as fact with no corroboration or sourcing. Take the Polish bloody Sunday event. The videos cite the number of german deaths as more than 50,000, a number lifted wholly from a Goebbels-led propaganda ministry. Obviously there are "questionable" points to "story never told" which is what you chose to focus on, but by doing so, you miss the point entirely.
