Anions and Cations are imperative in chemistry and in the workings of nature, i like it because it adds some flair to the map, its rather east + and - can attack each other, and ++ and -- can attack each other. its not that hard, i cant simplify itmore with out going into chemical properties of elements, and i dont want to do that

Map space is holding me back presently. I think I'm going to just add a box below the periodic table entirely so I can put things as I'd like to put them. The table itself is not changing size, the circles are a perfect 22px and I'd like to make the boxes feel spacious instead of cramped.

Third Beta:
Updates:
- Switched Hydrogen and Lanthanide colors
- Added Periods and Groups
- Moved map information to the bottom, aside from bonuses
- Cleared up Cation/Anion attack
- Added a nice little siggy to give credit to ShadowSteel9 (Steel, link to sig image is here:
http://img389.imageshack.us/img389/6756 ... sigrr4.jpg )
To Do:
- Change Semiconductor color to something not quite so close to Organics.

That's awesome, thank you for taking your time to work with me on this one. You've done a great job. keep up the good work

The color switch definitely helped. I still think the blue border is problematic for a couple reasons 1) it's hard to see against the 2 blue cell colors and 2) it's going to create tons of questions about which cells can attack which other cells.
Also, what does it mean that anions and cations on the same period can attack each other? I'm guessing that means in the same color set. Remember that many players haven't had chemistry in ages (if ever).
Best,
LMR

There are 7 periods, and 18 families in a periodic table, the periods are the horizontal rows in the period. Example F can attack LI.

I forgot to add in little cue arrows noting the way the border looks. It'll be in the next beta.

Periods are rows, Groups are columns. Those are actually noted right now by different numbering schemes, I'll just make them explicit.

that can be stupid proofed pretty easily, same number of pluses can attack same number of minuses in the same row. I am very impressed with development so far, looks great and the ions idea is genius, way too go!!!

Thankyou it's good to know that people are starting to take a greater interest in this map, and people do seem to like the ionic, and metallic bonding.
Keep the comments coming, if you would really like to see this map passed tell your friends, and maybe they'll like it also

Fourth Beta, Version 8

Updates:
- Flipped some continent colors around to make the impassable border more visible and prevent Semiconductor/Organic confusion
- Added radioactivity (You didn't have to wait U-238's half-life for this one)
- Added arrows on the Actinide/Lanthanide borders to indicate what territories are included
- Adjusted the Actinides bonus to be more appropriate for the massive amount of radiation on that series
- Clarified what a Period is
- Dropped the cheesy Glow+Stroke effect on the credits
Discussion Points:
- Is the Actinide/Lanthanide border clearer now?
- Do the continent color switch-arounds help with map readability?
- Isn't radioactivity cool? (er...hot...)
- Is the Actinide bonus a little overkill, or just right?
- Any other unique element properties we should add to the map?
To Do:
- Drop Hydrogen's + symbol, since nothing can attack it cation/anion.

Really looking forwardd to this map
I like the way you've managed to include the bonding into it and the radioactivity is a great idea.
However, coming from a chemistry point of view (No, I'm not an expert, but from what I know) I don't like the roman numerals being used to name the periods. They are usualy used in reference to groups as follows:
1&2 - as you'd expect, the alkali and alkali earth metals respectively
3-7 - the groups you've labelled 13-17 (yeah I know it's slightly odd - it's linked with the electron shels within the elements - but I won't go into it)
0 - the nobel gases
The others - I don't know (see, told you I'm not an expert)
Anyway it just confuses me seeing used for the periods - I'm so used to VII refering to the halogns etc.
Still, I'm not sure what others think, just thought I'd raise it.
Great map, by the way (Did I say that before?)

The period and group numbers are direct accordance with how they are displayed in a normal periodic table. Non-transition rows used to be known as 1A (Alkali) through 8A (Noble Gases), with the transition rows being roughly 1B through 9B, with three 8B columns. But they changed it a while back to be 1 through 18 straight across, though 1 and 2 are still known as the s-shell, 3-12 as the d-shell, and 13-18 as the p-shell of orbitals. The map's in accordance with the present table seen in textbooks.

I love the radioactive decay. It's super fun!
Also the arrows really help. I will raise (for the last time) my concern that the blue border does not contrast from the 2 shades of blue used in the map. Maybe green would be a better option.
I think you're making good progress. Keep up the good work!
Best,
LMR

i'm diggin it. does the decay eventually take it to a neutral or do you get to 1 and thats it?

It takes down to one, similar to Frostbite in AoR: Magic, the Dust Bowl effect, etc.
laci_mae, I'll see about flipping it to a boldly lime green and seeing if that works better for you.

Beta Four.One
Updates:
- Changed the blue border to lime green (uber readable!)

Discussion Points:
- I was considering naming conventions for this map when the XML and such is coded. Saying just Nobelium would leave a lot of people in the dark. What about using the Periods and Group numbers I added for ambiance as a coordinate system of some variety? E.G., Hydrogen I1, Uranium Ac3, Arsenic IV15.

I like the idea, but how about using the symbol instead of the name i.e. HI1 or H1I or just reverse it such as 1IH or I1H.
Just a thought to be able to figure out where each one located IMHO.
Can't wait to play!

id like to hve names, because if u use symbols u just need to use them, names will help people learn stuff, with the grp and row there of course

why not just put the Symbol and the name ex- H-Hydrogen or something like that

Lime green is my favorite col-or. (It could be a song!)
I think the symbols are definitely needed in the name list. In all honesty, I don't play this game to learn stuff. I play it to resolve dark inner feelings and to keep me from killing people in real life.

However, having both the names and symbols in the drop-down list might make me learn something even though I resist. Therefore, I second this option.
Best,
LMR
