LEBANON, Ore. (KOIN) — An Oregon man is celebrating both his 104th birthday and his recovery from the novel coronavirus.

William “Bill” Lapschies was one of the first two residents to test positive for the disease at the Edward C. Allworth Veterans’ Home. To date, 15 residents have tested positive and two have passed away, according to the Oregon Department of Veterans’ Affairs.

Lapschies has been isolated in his room since first showing symptoms on March 5. Staffers have been caring for him while using personal protective equipment, including gloves, gowns, face masks and plastic face shields. As of this week, “he has met the guidelines by the CDC and Oregon Health Authority to be considered recovered from COVID-19,” according to a spokesman for the VA.

After he tested positive, Brown said her father was “very very sick.” At one point, she said they discussed with doctors the possibility he might not make it. But Lapschies was a fighter.

“It seemed like he just made this wonderful recovery,” Brown said. “We were like shocked that he was kind of sitting in his wheelchair waving at us through the window and we were like, ‘He’s gonna make it!'”

The family thinks Lapschies may be one of the oldest people to recover from coronavirus.

“Bill’s pretty resilient,” son-in-law Jim Brown said, noting that Lapschies lived through the Spanish Flu, Great Depression, and a couple recessions. He was also stationed in the Aleutian Islands during WWII.

Great news! I'm not surprised the oldest survivor is American since American medicine has secured a 2.85% fatality rate for the infected. I wish all the Europeans and Sub-Saharan Africans suffering with 10%+ fatality rates could come to the U.S. for treatment but, unfortunately, there are limited resources.

Hmm... but the percentage of cases flagged "serious" or "critcal" is higher in the US than just about anywhere else, and the percentage of "recovered" lower, which leads me to think that the death rate will increase.

Anyway, as a valued ally, President Trump should order the U.S. Air Force to immediately evacuate Johnson to the United States. Statistically, he has a better chance of making it through this in an American hospital than in a British one (97% chance versus 90% chance).

Well, it appears that although we were told he was only going in "for tests", he has now been moved to intensive care.

Is your memory that short? I presented a thorough discussion about this less than two weeks ago.

Subject: coronavirus - is this real or hype?

I'm not saying the masks are the only element. {dk: emphasis added} We've been arguing about masks and so most of what I've said is about masks, but I'm not denying the importance of other elements. For starters, they're testing a much broader swath of the population that what we do in North America. That allows them to find infected people and isolate them before they become symptomatic. Also, everybody owns a thermometer and takes their own temperature regularly. This too helps find infected people sooner than waiting for other symptoms.

We won't know until it's all over and all the research papers are written, exactly which elements were most decisive. You don't know for sure, and I don't know for sure. All we can do is try to reason it out and try to keep an open mind.

You point out that South Korea was quick to cancel sporting events and other large gatherings, which I agree was also an important element. But what they have not done, is shut down entire cities. The kind of total shutdown that happened in Wuhan, and that is now happening in many European and American cities, wasn't needed. My thinking has evolved since I started that "shut down the quarantines" thread, but in general I still think shutting down an entire city to catch an illness should not be necessary. It's like using a sledgehammer to crack a walnut.

The Korean and Taiwanese strategy was very individual-focused. Test as many people as possible, have them take their temperature to further help catch infections, focus on those who are actually sick and quarantine them, have individuals in the wider society protect themselves with hygiene and masking. Locking up 10 million people because 10 thousand are sick is completely excessive, provided that more intelligent choices are used.

It's really ironic to me that the allegedly individualistic West is engaging in these vast totalitarian city shutdowns, while the allegedly collectivist hive minds of East Asia are focused on identifying and quarantining the sick, not the healthy. Most people in Taiwan, South Korea, and Singapore are going to work, and they will come out of this with their societies and economies in relatively whole condition.

So, to recap, what the successful (minority) nations have done:
Very quick shutdowns of sporting events, theatres, etc., but not of life in general. Most people still working.
Very broad testing of a large percentage of the population, so infected people are identified very quickly.
Aggressive contact tracing of infected people.
Selective quarantines of infected people and those at high risk to be infected.
Everyone owns a thermometer and takes their own temperature daily.
Everyone wears a mask in public.

So yeah, all six of these elements are an important. I only returned to the masks because most of you were telling me I'm an idiot about the masks. Nobody bothered attacking me on the other five points, so I didn't bother reiterating those, but obviously they are ALL part of a successful strategy.

I'd say of the six, testing is the most important. By knowing early who the infected people are, the successful nations were able to quarantine only those people who either are infected or have a high probability of being infected. In the West, we've followed the asinine policy of only testing people after they are obviously sick, with the result being we don't have any clue about who most of the carriers are. We've shut down entire cities. That's like using a battle axe to dice an onion, but it's the direct result of inadequate testing.

Singapore, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, despite very close connections to China, avoided large outbreaks. South Korea had a very large outbreak initially, but got it under control. Japan is having a 2nd wave outbreak now, but I expect they will also get it under control. In the West, the nation testing most aggressively is West Germany, and although it has a large number of cases it had a much lower fatality rate than similar nations. The experts suspect this is because they have identified many very mild cases that are flying under the radar in other countries.
