I'm excited that this is still in progress, I was worried that it was abandonded.
I wouldn't do that... then how would i ever drum up support for the half dozen other ideas i want to do after this one... ;)

so... as you can see, i've basically tried to make the map a lot easier to look at... I have drawn a new teleporter icon, that is alot more distinctive and with simpler map textures the icons and text will now be much more recognisable...

Looking at the colours of the icons so far i was thinking (to help keep things distinct) the Laser icons (still labelled defences at the moment) should be bright green, the missile silo will change to an Ion beam and will probably have a pink/purple icon and the landing zone icon can be white... this will make spotting them much easier...

this is half a draft really, so i haven't changed my first post image yet... still working away at it... very keen to get it into the foundry soon, won't go into the details, but some stuff happened and i've been quite busy of late, but i'm back now. so I'll be waiting for any feedback i can get while i work...

Thanks everybody for all the support and help so far, can't wait to get this map out there so ya'll can kill each other on it (even though it's gonna take few more months yet)... :D

no good?.. trying to keep the rustic feel without making it so hard to look at... I can smooth them out easily enough if that's what you recommend?

Yes I would recommend... pixelation almost never looks good anywhere.

So... disregarding the pixellation on the map... I still need icons for a laser, ion beam and a landing site... any suggestions?

Draw them yourself.

What's wrong with the current landing zone icon again? It may have come up, but I've forgotten.

The laser, I think you need a bright red beam coming out of a barrel (or two, or three). That should make it distinctive.

The ion beam, choose a different color, maybe green, and change to a stubby cannon-look perhaps.

okay... sorry it's taking so long guys... i haven't posted because i haven't done anything decisive yet... been playing around with map textures and icons... and after much deliberation i have decided to remove a couple more territories before continuing... i will post a new draft a soon as i have time...

so here we go... what i am looking at so far... and this is what i am currently considering:

Is danger tape a good choice for marking impassable lines?

Should i contnue to use the targeting windows or get rid of range for the big guns and use target icons instead (adding yet another icon, in two colours and removing an integral idea from the map)?

are the red arrows a good choice for one-way attacks?

Are the borders clear (disregarding the fact that i haven't marked impassables yet)?

now that i have softer textures and a lighter overall colour... can i get away with using smaller font than before to make room for bigger icons again and a more comfortable look in general? if not/ why not?

am i stuck?.. i feel stuck...

Are you still using clip art for your icons?

they don't look too good. all pixelated & smudgy. better to draw them yourself.

The pixellation might need to be addressed at some point, but the gameplay is more critical at this stage, and the icons work okay for that. I'm liking the direction that you're taking the gameplay, paring it down a bit, and the targeting is very doable now I think; there is variety, yet in the end I think it will be readable and playable (if Stalingrad can work, this definitely can).

The territory names are really my biggest concern now; how do you want to name the terts, and will the names fit and still be readable? I think they will be alright... but better to make sure before moving on and talking about gameplay further.

Anyway, keep up the good work :)

cheers duder : )

this is exactly what i was thinking... rather then going round and round in circles redoing the graphics, i thought i'd get a workable map happening so that we could actually start to discuss the gameplay... I am still working on the graphics obviously and i have a lot of options for textures and pallette settings...but, like you said it's a workable map now and i need to focus on getting the text down, just to make sure we can move forward from here.

but once we are discussing gameplay... i can start working on much better graphics and play simultaneously... then i'll start V 4.0 (we are currently looking at V3.5 i don't know how to change the name of this thread)...

PS I'm really liking the menus though : )

Hey everyone... Just wanted to send another apology to everyone who has been following this thread and to those are waiting to see what's happening next... this map is still in development, I have had various personal 'complications' over the past few months and have not been able to focus as much time as I would have liked to on any of my current projects... but rest assured... without going into any details... the source of the problem is gone, so I'll be right back into it all very soon :) :) :)
