Ethnic history: the Greek people lived on that land long before the Romans conquered it and longer still before the coming of the Ottomans. I admit, it is hardly a very sound position to hold but there you have it.

On a side note, "modern" Greece isn't that old. And most of the Balkans could have gone along fine without the Ottomans rampaging about and they'd be better off without that in their history books. But the reality is what it is.
