It must be a different metric, then. Probably standardizing the term "word" to mean 5 key strokes, and not counting errors. If that's the case, I can believe 165, and I can believe that a school using a system like that would require 60 wpm to pass the course.

Question : was the passage you were supposed to type for the test always the same (ie, did you have a chance to practice that specific passage), or was it randomized in some fashion? If it's the former, I can believe 165 even if you did count mistakes, although I seriously question the methodology.

At any rate, I'm not bringing this up to disparage you, nor to say I don't think you can type quickly (you obviously do), just to mention that those numbers seem strange - especially the bit about requiring 60 wpm to pass the course. Generally, anything faster than 30-40 wpm requires being a proficient touch typist; 60 implies a good touch typist, not merely proficient, and thus it is estremely strange that that would be used as the benchmark for a high school course.
