a little bit of snow

and britain grinds to a halt.

a couple of days of snow has seen our roads become treacherous and the railways virtually cancelled. hence nobody or the vast majority stay at home. today i needed to speak to a solicitor and due to the 'inclement weather' the bitch is reluctant to get off her lazy arse.

the shops have had no fresh meat, fruit/veg or bread. the authorities where i live have not even attempted to clear the major roads or the footpaths of the city. it's bloody ridiculous!

thank god hitler never got his hands on a giant snow making machine. for if he had, the nazi's would've marched through britain unhindered.

That sounds awful.

I love the snow, in fact driving in it is the most fun :D

You guys should really invest in at least 1 snowplow, they are very helpful.

Your plight is unfortunate. Dress warm and start helping your neighbors to dig out. Don't be part of the problem be part of the solution.

Where I am from you stockpile food in the winter. We have 2 to 3 months worth, just in case.

Snowplows aren't expensive either. In fact, you can just buy ones that you can attach to the front of a pickup truck. But generally, the owner of the property is the one who clears the sidewalks. It's not hard... All you need is a flat shovel. It only takes like, 5 minutes too, if you only have a bit of snow.

Yeah, it takes around 6+ inches or -40 wind chill to cancel school here, which doesn't happen too often, even in WI
(our school district likes to punish us for some reason)
and that doesn't necessarily mean anything else is slowed down too much.

Only 6+? If we got 6ft (which seems to be getting to that point here) then the schools might consider closing. But here in Wyoming, we not only have to deal with inches to feet of snow, ice covered roads, and sub-zero temperatures, but also winds up to 60+ mph. And those winds are year round.

If we shut down everytime we had a little snow, Wyoming would be shut down at least 8 months of the year.

Wow, kind of sad really. Pck up a shovel and start shoveling.

I think because of this you guys have better funding for winter preparedness, at 6 inches here the roads start getting pretty awful even with plows in full force.

To be fair, that's quite a lot of snow to shovel through for an area that rarely gets any.

I live in Austin right now, and it seems that every time we have bad weather, it is impossible to drive onto a freeway because there are too many car crashes. I've lived in places where the type of weather that causes this is around for half the year without causing as much trouble as it does in one day over here.

It's all up to whether you are used to that kind of weather or not.

There are only a few roads or so in town that actually get plowed. Mainly Grand and 3rd. And those 2 because they run right through town onto highways. Mostly, it is I-80 that needs to be plowed, especially on "the summit" as it is one of the most treacherous passes in the nation. Year round at that. Mainly due to foolish truckers driving 75, downhill, in heavy rain.

I've always thought it was partly because people in the dry, warm climates of America let their tires get ridiculously bald, so when a little drizzle comes, it's like the end of the world.

At least, that was my impression of LA, the few times I saw rain there.

Funny how much of Europe has horrible weather during and after a global warming conference.

France also had nasty snow, Poland had people freezing to death and Italy had grapes frozen.

Luxury. We used to dream of 6 ft of snow. I remember when the snow would cover up all but the tallest buildings, and we had to survive on nothing but wicker furniture and younger siblings, and they'd still have us come into school. I had to tunnel through two miles of snow every morning, both ways, and sometimes the snow would collapse and bury me until the spring thaw.

Okay first of all, where the hell in WI gets snow days for 6 inches? They used to send us outside for recess in that shit, and that was in IL.

Secondly, consider yourself lucky boy, I've had 2 snow days in the past 6 years and that's more than most get. :P

6 is the lower limit, 8 is usually a better chance, though if there is ice and the roads are extra slippery then 6 will do just fine.

So you want the government to spend millions on tackling freak weather conditions that happen once in 30 years?

look on Monday night and all through Tuesday around the Manchester area fell about 6-8 inches. this caused all schools in Salford and most in Manchester to shut. it's nothing to do with the amount. it's all about Health and Safety going mad. in the 70's and 80's it was far worse than this and we just got on with it and sled down the school hill.

the reason most of our country has come to a shuddering stop, is that we are quickly running out of grit/salt. only major roads and motorways are being treated. most pavements are being left, except for outside supermarkets.

the snow has not fell in the last 3 days, but with temperatures not getting above freezing, the snow is not melting or if it does it turns to ice very quickly. last night just south of Manchester it got to -17, now that's fooking cold. one village in Scotland was -22.4, the record is -28 over here.

OK, now that I think about this post, I feel mean......lol.....BUT.......I live in BRITISH Columbia, on Vancouver Island, and every year we get a dump of snow on our usually rainy winter season, and every year some bonehead kills somebody by driving badly in it, or simply choosing to ignore it and hoping it will go away. I moved here 26 years ago from snowy Nova Scotia, and it STILL pisses me off to see people whine about it and yet not pick up a shovel. Fix the problem guys! And help out your neighbours who can't! sheesh!

it's nothing to do with picking up a shovel. it still would not open schools or get secondry roads running smoothly. we pay our taxes and get a shit service to say the least.

GK we don't have to spend millions, but to run out of grit after a week and half of bad weather is piss poor.
