Anyways so here is the deal...

I need to move. I have some money which I plan to spend on renting an apartment and gas for my car to drive.

I am going to be moving to a totally strange place. I will not know anyone there or have any friends or anything. So help from any kind of relatives or such is out of the question.


I have enough cash to last me about a month So I will obviously be looking for a job immeadiatly. I have had a few jobs and always done very well at them. So I know I am a good work just how to get one soon after moving is a concern to me.

I would wonder what advice anyone who might have done this or something similar is. Such as how to get a job quick, What to look for and avoid in an apartment, Maybe how to minimize my living expense.

For lodging, look on craigslist starting now. Maybe find the local paper in the place you are moving to and contact people who have a room to rent or a tiny apartment. But don't wait to start that. I recommend getting the smallest crappiest place you can first, and if possible on a month-to-month basis. That way you can begin a search for a more permanent place once you at least have a place to lock up your stuff, shower, eat, and sleep.

As for finding a job, the key is being flexible. If you are willing to do just about anything as long as it gets you some cash, you can find work. When calling places about apartments, ask the landlord if they have painting, cleaning, maintenance, yardwork, etc, that they want done. If they don't, ask them if they have contractors they use who might be looking for someone to be an assistant or a gopher or a general laborer. Call restaurants and ask if they are looking for anybody. Fast food is usually easy to get a job but the pay is crap.

Well, I can't give much because I don't know much about you, which is probably a good thing (that's sounds mean, but I'm not trying to be).

I mean, you know of craigslist, and people here will give you more job-searching websites for wherever you're moving to (hopefully, a large city).

I have higher chances of getting the job I want when I meet them in person (e-mail ranks the lowest in chances).

Buying a bicycle (about $50-$150) is a cheap and a significant long-term money-saving investment. Not buying fast food, and cooking is a much cheaper alternative. Not smoking or drinking cut down drastically on living expenses (which is unbearable for a lot of people, so hopefully you're mentally stronger than most).

Apartments: Make sure everything works when you're there. Just absolutely f*ck with everything to make sure every single commodity in that place works while the landlord is there. The A/C, the heater, the windows, the oven, the toaster, the fridge, the lights, EVERYTHING, go bonkers. And as far as apartment searching goes, there's always something better, so at least go through a few before making a decision (try not signing a long-term lease, maybe persuade the man to a 3-month deal if you can). If you can, stay at some place cheap like hostel instead of a hotel for the first week (maybe fewer than 7 days). Of course, do a little research on the hostel beforehand, and hopefully you're not toting too much unnecessary stuff.

And while doing this, try to stay calm and as evenly headed as possible. Getting pissed or angry will only lead to poor decisions, so just remember to be very patient and be in control of yourself.

You want advice... here is mine.

get yourself some business cards... nothing fancy, just some cards.

When you are out and about job hunting... use them. give them to most anyone that you meet that will give you the time of day. And learn to use a fucking spell checker... invaulable == invaluable. f*ck

Do you know where you're going? Do you know when you're going? Why are you going?

If you've got time, and you know where you're going, research online now, as much as you can, make phone calls, try to set something up before you ever get there.

A quick thought- wherever you move into apartment wise, don't be afraid to be really insistent on an inventory. When you get there, be sure to be really critical about the state of any items provided. I tend to be quite generous, but it's worth being cynical about the state of things- is the fridge really new? Are the walls really unmarked?

One thing that really gets me quite far is simply, introduce yourself to your neighbours. Just knock on the door and say that you're moving in. Most people don't do that, but it can often set up a simple social network. Maybe just an invitation to dinner at some point, or a few casual conversations. It's kind of obvious advice, but not many people do it- they wait for their neighbours to welcome them.

I do have a city I have been looking at.

I am going cause I like it there I am young and have nothing better going on sick of my social/family life up here and am looking for a change-figure cant be any worse if I move and might get better.

The only problem is i live far from texas so The chance to view the apartment before hand might be a problem

Do they have Youth Hostels in the US?

I used to wander around a lot in my teens using the YHA in the UK. DIrt cheap, really friendly, full of people who know the ropes too. A good place to stay for a week or two while you make sure you can get a decent plce, and look it over properly (as others have advised).

Check the rugs for wear and tear, as you do NOT want one 30 years old. 5 years old, and no more than 10 is good, and make sure that it had been cleaned since the last time someone was in it. Make sure the electrical wires are not frayed or going out. And also, check to make sure everything is clean, as that is usually a good sign that the apartment is well taken cared of.

I lived in Texarkana for 8 months last year. Was an interesting place, right on the border of Texas and Arkansas. Being from Detroit, it really wasn't what I was looking for, but I did enjoy myself there. The people are friendly for the most part.

i would suggest learning to speak spanish if your going to texas

I realize (and I do) that you are Conservative. And that Texas is a Conservative state.But, you may be interested to look at some other factors rather than what state looks the coolest to you.Their minimum wage is like $4.50 an hour for crying out loud.They have enough cheap labor that they don't have to raise it.And they don't give out jack for state benefits either.You don't want to be caught choosing between your apartment and food.Maybe you'll find the right church...But I wouldn't just pick up and move with no education just for that. Were I you, I would move to a blue state. They are a lot more forgiving and giving.The environment will be a little bit more of what you are used to, and you'll make more money.

Sure our state is billions in debt, but as a Canadian Citizen, you're not responsible for that. And you can enjoy our $8.25 minimum wage. It's soon to be $8.50 by law too. Plus half of live chat lives her, so you'll already have a support network of friends kinda . Heck I mean, I don't have a roommate or anything...hehe.... I guess I wouldn't mind sharing a place with a girl like you or whatever... anyway, just something to think about...
BTW we have awesome state parks and hamburgers. Chicago pizza too.
