I LOVE my country. I am so PROUD that my mother and father had perfunctory sex on this lump of rock instead of another lump of slightly different rock. And I KNOW that GOD HIMSELF has chosen this lump of rock over every other lump of rock to be his favouritest lump of rock on the planet.

I love my country SO FUCKIN MUCH that I will act in the service of WHATEVER agenda is presented to me by the politicians who make this arbitrarily delineated chunk of landmass what it is. Because even though words like 'freedom' and 'terror' are abstract nouns, I will lay down my life to either attack and defend (or defend and attack, i can't quite remember which) freedom and terror (and also possibly happiness and failure and mysticism, if I am asked) because I LOVE MY COUNTRY.

Well, I am sorry to say then, you are a fool, with perhaps the exception of defending your rock of course. Not defending an attack on your rock would probably lead to your death and the death of your family.

What is interesting, either intentional or not, is that someone from any country in the world could have typed this exact message, and most reading will assume it is about their country, and respect only those that feel this same way about their country, and hate all others that feel the same about different ones. Again, if someone is attacking your country and your family, not attacking back is insane, except on the few occasions when perhaps the attackers are actually there to liberate you. Unfortunately, your liberation will probably mean you are dead in most cases.

Unfortunately, your satire can also be brought down with one example. Hey, heavycola. I want your house and everything in it. Im going to just come in and take it. Could you move out now and just let me have it thanks.

I fully respect the point of this, and agree with the message you were going for, but its just a little on the sloppy side.

Try this:

I love my country. I was born here, and it is the best country in the world. God gave us this country, to come kill its native inhabitants so we could build the best nation in the world. I will stop at nothing to make my life better in this country, even if it is at the expense of many other lives in many other countries, because, God wants it that way, and it is my birthright.

I will not accept that others may come to this country, or that they have the same rights, because I was born here, and they were not. Also, if their parents were not legal citizens, it does not matter if they were born here, because my parents were legal citizens, so I deserve more.

I will pay, and volunteer to attack and kill other countries because they do not agree with my country, or because they have resources I very much need, to maintain my way of life. I will kill other innocent people who also defend their country, because God has chosen my country as the country above all. I love my country, and I will sell my soul and do anything to make my life better in it.

Fitz, the point isn't that political systems which can enforce and defend things like property rights are a bad thing. If you tried to take my house from me, I would call the police (unless I was in at the time, in which case I would ninja you to death myself). I pay for the police, and the rest of the legal/justice system, out of my taxes. That is fair. But they are not better police just because they are english. My point, apart from procrastination and alleviating my own boredom, is that patriotism is pointless and misguided, not government. Now please get out of my garden, you're scaring the kids.

Well as I said, I agreed with your intended sentiment, if not your delivery. I was just making the counterpoint that there are indeed patriots and that our rock indeed needs to be protected. What was now obviously unintentional, but interesting was as I said that it could be chanted by anyone on any rock really, and highlights the silliness of the human race in many ways.

Who gives a shit about radical traditionalism? I said I was a patriot because I love the arbitrarily delineated landmass on which my parents fucked. Of course it's geographical. That's why i support the building of a massive immigrant-proof fence all around it.

You are presenting an argument that presumes that I presented an argument against an opponent I invented, but whose views I do not understand. Can an imaginary foil have views? More to the point, as the inventor of my own opponents, i understand their views fully. And that is why they are so wrong. It is also why I always win at arguments and individual sports.

I was going to ask if anyone though Patriotism is based on maybe a bit more than a piece of rock... but also on a belief or value system. However, your summary is much better Saxi... much more eloquent.

Of course, there are two sides to "patriotism"...
-> the practical side is about defending your piece of rock and the resources therein (pure defense); and it's also about protecting your interests (trade, commercial) (offensive defence).. and getting additional resources for your "tribe" (pure offense).
-> the 'spritual' side is about what defines your "tribe" aside from geographic location. This is shared culture, politcal system, world view, etc.

If your definition of patriotism is limited soley to negative things that have come from this.

Like all "religions", patriotism can and has been used to manipulate/direct the efforts of people in both positive and negative ways.

Simple example...
*Patriotism was exploited by Hilter to marshal the people of Germany to kill Jews (and others) throughout Eastern Europe and to wage a war of aggression against his neighboring countries.
*... to counter this, Patriotism was exploited by Churchill and Roosevelt to marshal the people to fight against the tyranny of Hilter. The immediate goal of Roosevelt was to protect our "piece of rock" and our right to open trade throughout the world. However in doing these two things we stopped Hilter from continuing to kill innocent people... and we shut down the vicious Japanese Empire which was killing innocents in Asia.

It does. You can tell who won the battle, by who is authoring the history of it.
