Why is sex (and other things) so taboo?

I've been trying to figure it out for a while now. Like, this one C&A thread, people think the username "clit" is offensive. I don't get it...why?

Why don't we want little kids to know what the word "clit" means...or words like "f*ck" or "shit"? Because they're offensive?

WHY ARE THEY OFFENSIVE

Why the Hell do we wear clothes? How come guys can show their nips in public but girls can't...what about guys that have man boobs and girls that are flatchested?

Why are guys so attracted to pieces of fat that pump out milk anyway?

I DONT GET IT

Actually, this article about masturbation discusses this a little... does anyone here know how true the theory it proposes is / might be?

Saxi, just because you're too old and fragile to dress yourself doesn't mean the rest of us are.

EDIT: Double negative

Wow, AoG, you really pick the hard questions. I think a lot of the answers have nothing to do with each other. (That’s the way things are, the things you think are related are not, and the things that are not obviously related are.)

So let’s get to the subject of the female anatomy. (Yes there is a female anatomy, although that’s not always obvious to centuries of male medical students.) Through a complex interplay of apathy and prudishness, the fact that organs aren’t “missing” in one gender compared to another, they are just “different” gets ignored. You don’t even see research into the female equivalent of the male prostate gland until the 20th century.

Next is the subject of the F bomb. Although the bomb is no longer a bomb in the UK, the origin of the vulgar meaning of the word comes clearly from the French (I mean the Normans). A lot of “English” words were given low class status by the French speaking Normans.

Next is “shit” or the kiddies F bomb. No really, for most pre-sexual children, the number 2 is the source of all (wink wink) jokes. Everyone does it but you never discuss it … except in a joke.

We wear clothes because it gets really damn cold. I mean I never understand women; they always complain they are too cold when it’s damn obvious why. (The answer is, by the way, naked necks. Two of your biggest veins run right near the skin. Now the solution “cover the neck” while leaving the cleavage exposed might be a little tricky, but that’s why fashion made scarves.)

The notion of the exposed breast being naughty is a relatively recent thing. Then again, so is the bra and bikini. Go figure. Man boobs have generally gone under the radar, although back in the pre-bikini days, men did wear tops with their bathing suits.

Oh and it’s a closely kept secret (guys aren’t the only ones who are attracted to boobs, but they are the only ones who are attracted to them without having any of their own). I’m going to go with the “blame the bra” theory. P.S. last time I checked, there was a small but growing voice among medical researchers suggesting that bras are bad for you.

I think its because sex is something that women have a lot of control over and mankind is sexist. Meanwhile violence is a male pastime so we can see all the gore and guts we want on television, but not a nipple.

Though Tzor made a good post, I think squishyg summed the general principle up better.

Army of GOD wrote:Why are guys so attracted to pieces of fat that pump out milk anyway?

The answer to this is down to sex and offspring (which is why you're not attracted to a cow's udders).

[In a woman], fully-fledged breasts are a sign of sexual maturity and such. Furthermore, healthy-looking breasts are more likely to be able to nurture your offspring sufficiently, ultimately ensuring that your genes are passed on.

tzor wrote:Next is the subject of the F bomb. Although the bomb is no longer a bomb in the UK...

...this is not 100% true, but the word has certainly lost its effect.

So what happened with Italy?

Sounds more like an American thing.

I think it has more to do with people wanting to prolong the naive bubble of childhood. The world sux and sex is complicated. Childhood kicks ass, you don't have to know anything, things are simple and everything is done for you. Once you learn about sex and what not you start traveling down the road of adulthood and shit gets complicated and sucky. Parents remember this and want their kids to be happy and protected for as long as possible. That's why society has built this bubble around the issues. That's my theory anyway.

You are correct, however America does not hold the copyright on sexism, we have just worked on developing it over the years.

"offensive" usernames

I want to continue the discussion from this locked thread (viewtopic.php?f=239&t=128118)

Why is a word such as penis or clit offensive? They are both part of anatomy. Everyone has one or the other (or both? I've never studied hermaphorodites closely).

Because, don't you know, America was founded by sexual prudes! That is why some Americans are nuts and attach such power to silly words. It's rather pathetic.

I think it's a rather universal issue. People having issues with their sexuality... out of sight, out of mind, and everyone can pretend to be happy.

Good point. I guess a lot of people are sexual prudes. But America was founded by them... :D

I remember coming across these two NPR stories/podcasts a while ago.
http://news.wvpubcast.org/templates/sto ... d=15370150
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/stor ... d=89127830

Though not directly related---the words discussed are 'swear/cursewords,' and those words you've supplied don't quite fall into that specific category---there is a general over-arching relationship.

Moreover, I remember reading (from Steven Pinker's The Stuff of Thought, I believe), that part of the trouble with words---any words---is that once you become literate, you can't really avoid reading not reading and instantly understanding their meaning (and by extension, your experiences with those words on a personal level).

This makes sense. And that could definitely explain why some people get so offended by hearing certain words. I guess, maybe, in a way, it's sort of similar to a black person hearing the "N" word. If it's bad experiences that a person has in relation to these words, that is. I don't know.

We don't hold the copyright on what? ... Oh for a moment there I thought you said "sex."

You can blame Franklyn for that; he was always putting his inventions in the public domain. ;)

You make a good point. I guess maybe those poor women in parts of Africa and other Muslim-majority countries that have female circumcisions maybe? Not like we really have many of them here on CC though.....
