The Log Cabin Republicans sued to allow gays in the U.S. armed forces and scored an earlier victory with a District Court ruling declaring "Don't Ask / Don't Tell" illegal. The Obama administration appealed and got an injunction from the federal circuit court against the district court's decision. The Republican group, in turn, appealed to the Supreme Court, a move the Obama administration vowed they would fight to the bitter end. Obama ultimately won and there will be no gays in the U.S. military.

Obama is also on-record as opposing gay marriage. In the 2010 election, 31% of gays voted Republican, up from a high of 23% in 2000. (http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1110/44743.html) Several of Obama's recent speeches have been interrupted by gay hecklers.
