Nope, you can die and win with the town. Same with mafia and cult unless some alternate Win Condition occurs. At least that's how I've always counted wins and losses.

I'm actually more interested in the town & mafia win/loss records than personal statistics (well there a few things that might be fun to keep track of, like number of votes, FOSes, how many times lynched as opposed to NKed, etc). In my opinion though, too many factors go into individual performance to measure it by games won. But thanks for posting that list Safari, it reminds me that I really should try to get access to the mafia clan forum.
