WHAT? The British brought us gravity? How did they do that when they couldn't even stand firmly on the ground?

Also - the Greeks brought you the rest of that stuff. So suck it.

Again, Isaac Newton didn't bring us gravity. Maybe he figured out what the hell made us not fly up into the sky... if so, kudos to him.

Here's why my ancestors did:

- Invented philosophy as a way to examine the word
- Invented literature and most, if not all, literary types
- Developed mathematics, including geometry and applied mathematics, as well as calculus
- Astronomy
- Medicine
- Democracy (real democracy)
- Education
- And, oh by the way - language. Two brief and relevant examples:

(1) Economy - from the Greek word oikonomia
(2) Democracy - from the Greek word demokratia

So 'English word derived from Greek' = 'Greece invented it'?

'anorexia' comes from Greek. The Greeks invented anorexia!
'Antarctic' comes from the Greek 'antarktikos'. The Greeks invented Antarctica!
'blaspheme' is a Greek word. :(

I see that, unlike me, you are unable to cite names for your 'inventions'. Adam Smith > un-named Greek 'economist'.

5-0

I said "The Greeks invented language" and gave you two words that they invented and that your ancestors (who lived in caves, painted their faces, and killed each other with sticks while my ancestors were inventing shit and practicing democracy) stole and converted to their own language.

In any event, I think you'll find most English words come from some Greek derivation.

I can certainly cite names for their inventions. You may have heard some of these before.

Philosophy - Plato and Socrates
Literature - Homer, Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, and Aristotle
Math - Pythagoras (I think there is some sort of theory or something named after him... who knows?), Euclid, Archimedes
Astronomy - Eudoxus, Callippus, Heraclides, Aristarchus, Eratosthenes
Medicine - Hippocrates (I think there is some sort of oath named after him... who knows?)
Democracy - invented and used in Athens by Cleisthenes
Education - Plato and Isocrates

Lets pick on this one. William Wallace - Scottish - Fought AGAINST the British FOR Freedom.

I know of 13 tiny colonies that also fought AGAINST the British FOR freedom.

GOD SAVE THE KING!

You know that philosophy is just 'thinking about stuff', right? I don't think Greece can really copyright that.

Great Britain is England, Wales and Scotland. Therefore any Scottish achievement (and believe me, there are plural) is also a British achievement.

Hey England, we and France kicked your ass in the Revolution!

And if Quebec hadn't been hit with bad weather, allowing Red Coat reinforcements, we'd have freed Canada from King George's tyranny too! We still weep for your tragic fate, Canadian brethren! May you know freedom and liberty someday too!

Either some of you are being wickedly ironic or I misunderstand the point of this thread.

Yep. A conquered Wales and Scotland is Great Britain. Thread title is England. England conquered and enslaved and became Great Britain. To this day I'm sure the majority of Scottish claim to be from Scotland and not from England or Great Britain...

And posting pics of terrorist sewage in orange jumpsuits on their knees does not detract from freedom in the USA. If it were not for ideals of freedom and justice those enemies of freedom would have just been shot instead of sheltered and fed and their imprisonment is for the safety of many free people. They are getting better than they deserve.

What about all those people who end up being released with no charge? LOL. Freedom and justice my foot.

English is actually a Germanic language. It just borrows words from many other languages and then bastardizes those.

It bastardized a whole lot of Greek and Latin words then.

USA consists of former colonies of England, France, Spain and The Netherlands. Despite being an anglophile, I never understood why the English renamed New Amsterdam into New York. I mean Amsterdam is a great historic city, vibrant, a cultural landmark and full of awesomeness. Have you ever been in York? It's drab, it's grey, it's depressing.

And including William Wallace in English awesome stuff is just lfmao.
