The top 3% of the population hold most of the worlds wealth.

So I've heard that statement thrown around.
I thought oh that must be one of those conspiracy theory things. I thought the top 3% they are talking about are like billionares or millionares at least. The kind of people that have crazy amounts of money and are hanging with the bilderburgers and rotweilerchilds.
What I heard today was the top 3% are people that can afford more than one set of clothes and more than one pair of shoes.
So I'm wondering is that true? I figure there's several experts on everything here that can fill us in on the facts.
Aaaaannnd... Go!

this is a bit inflated. but numer of 10-20% sounds believable. take into account large coutries like China, India and african and south american continent where majority of population is very poor.

QFT
most of third world families cant afford anything, so 10-20% does sound truthfull.

Did you count them, where's your number from?

The most comprehensive study of personal wealth ever undertaken also reports that the richest 1% of adults alone owned 40% of global assets in the year 2000, and that the richest 10% of adults accounted for 85% of the world total. In contrast, the bottom half of the world adult population owned barely 1% of global wealth.
this is from a un report on global income distribution...admittedly in the 2006 report the statistics are only from 2000, but these things tend to lag by a few years.
Also this was a very simple scan of the summary of the report, once could certainly look closer to find more information.

Assuming that there's 6 billion people in the world, three percent of that is 180 million. In the year 2000, there was 281 million people in the US alone. What do YOU think, 2dimes?

I think Monseur Spam is the only one coming up with statistics that sound reasonable and the 3% number is low.
Second place for tonka and the dated UN report.
The guessing is nice but I want some expert opinion with the precise numbers here.

seriously....considering the factors which are leading to income disparity didnt decrease in the last 7 years, and since your only going to accumulate stats so often your only going to get numbers from 2003-04 at best probably...
however since that is the report you are looking for
search for unu-wider and youll get the report to thumb through yourself.

Settle down tonka, I was thinking the 1% number you cited was kind of like I imagined the 3% to be, simple people like you and I don't need to do any research around here.
We need simply wait for the "experts" in here to tell us the "real" facts.
I'll check on how it's going and if they come through tomorow.

The truth is that Xtra's got about a billion-gazillion dollars stashed and is unwilling to dish it out to anyone! But all you got to do is prove that a 757 hit the Pentagon!

3% is high. do your research. most people in the world don't even have potable water and live on less than a dollar a day.

Probably a news report about the UN report you've found. But the results are indeed shocking. Half of the worlds population own 1% of global wealth and 2% of adults own more than half of the global wealth.
Time for some wealth redistribution methinks....

Flashleg, you send a shiver down my spine... your otherwise naive and idealistic comments, as nice as they sound, come from your mouth as a loaded, arrow of bitterness towards the average penny-turner.
You send the wind up me.
