How many pages of tourney instructions would you read?

At some point in the distant future I may end up running a unique style of tournament that will require many pages of instructions. I am wondering how many pages of instructions you would be willing to read in order to understand the tournament. I am sure that the tournament idea will interest a number of people, but I don't want to scare them off with too many instructions.

Thanks!

I think that I would read them all, even if there was 10 of them, because I always read all of them, but I think that you shouldn't aim more than 3-4 because not everybody is :ugeek: like me

It all depends on how long the pages are.

Provided you dont go wall of text on people, they should read all of it as long as you hook them in the first page. The remaining however many pages should be techncal crap that are like..specific penalites and timelimits and whatnot, so that people cant weasel out of a tight spot.

i'm not interested in playing in a tournament where reading the instructions takes longer than playing the games.

It's sounding like if I can condense the main rules that everybody needs to know into a 2-3 page summary that there should be enough interest to get the players and then just have the team leaders (4 of them) need to read through and understand the rest of the game.

I think that should be doable. I do appreciate everyone's feedback and hope that people continue to offer it. To everyone who's continuing to read this far and can give feedback.... do you think that the mechanics on how certain decisions (ties, conflicts of moves within the game, etc) should be included in the rule set? If so, should they be part of the main rules, a completely separate section, or something else?

To Natewolfman: The problem here is that the tournament will be a a game all to itself where battles within the game are decided by games played on CC. The game itself is where all the rules/instructions come from, so skimming probably wouldn't work well. Though, as I mentioned above, I think I can condense the main rules into 2-3 pages. The rest are only things the team leader needs to worry about; though anyone else having read them would be able to contribute more to the strategy within the game.

The thing is, I suspect that even at 10 pages, it would take a fraction of the time to read the instructions compared to playing the games. There will be in a high likelyhood that the average number of games per person will be around a dozen... some people may end up playing 3 dozen games, perhaps more.

For example: amazzony's monopoly tournament... a hella lot of instructions, i briefly skimed it, once it all started up i picked up the rules as i went... thats usually how i do it when we have alot of rules to deal with. Just no real time to sit down and read it, and most of the time when i do, ill probably end up forgetting majority of them until they are put into practice

Ahh, okay. That probably makes more sense anyways. I suspect that the tournament I'm thinking of would probably be best done like that as well. I'm hoping I can also come up with a quick reference post as well, so that all the information that's normally needed is easily accessible.

it all depends on:

  • how big the font is
  • how big the pages are
  • if the tournement is a one off
  • how often i play in tournemnets
  • if the tournement is interesting

but still i would say that minimum is best for me :D
