i'm going to include father ted, because it's from the british isles.

so it's between:

fawlty towers
the office
father ted
peep show

... has to be father ted, closely followed by farty towels.

I'm a huge fan of Flowery Twats, and would tend to cast my vote in that direction, but I've never heard of Father Ted or Peep Show. Are they more recent?

Also, Extras, may not belong in the "of all time" category, but damn that's a funny show.

fawlty towers
Blackadder

They're showing The Thin Blue Line currently locally - first rate stuff, not all-time great, but excellent.

Coupling doesn't make any list so far?

From the last few years, I think Coupling and Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps stand out.
Although in both there was a bit too much plot to really call them sit-coms. Things happened, the story progressed.

I'm partial to Black Adder.
And Mr. Bean.
Most stuff with Rowan Atkinson. He did a police show too, didn't he?
I'm sorry, I don't know why either.

Did the English like that show, "The young ones?"

I was also a big fan of the little-know The High Life - I find it impossible to say the name "Shona" without making it an impression of the scottosh air stewards from that show.

The Thin Blue Line (I believe)

And word to coupling, but it's too much like Friends. (Though funnier.)

Best sitcoms?
Blackadder
The Office
Falwty Towers
(Perhaps My Family, but there are too many non-funny bits.)

Honorable mention goes to A Bit of Fry and Laurie which doesn't win because it's not a sitcom (but fucking hilarious nonetheless).

Well, if you want old stuff, a few years ago they re-ran some of the classic "hancock's half-hour" in the UK. The good bits were wonderful. The bit where he's describing thw plot of a book to his mate in the library, then is "shushed", and goes on to mime the rest of the story, is priceless.

Father Ted is old skool. Like FT, though, it hasn't been recorded in many years. Peep Show is the best known incarnation of Mitchell and Webb.

Even though I love Fawlty Towers, The Young Ones is my favorite. It only ran for two seasons but I love every episode. Absolutely Fabulous is hilarious as well.

Farty Towels or Blackadder, possibly the third one (that's the one with Lord Percy yeah?). Though the Xmas special was gold. The Office is great, and stands out as a fantastic British production, but Blackadder was start to finish bellylaughs.

EDIT: The Mighty Boosh is a dark horse - that show has had me in stitches

EDIT 2: The Young Ones rates a mention
