I thought all maps went to the foundry....and I don't think the double helix structure is attributed to Darwin, is it?
I was hoping for a Darwin awards thread when I opened this.

Watson, Crick and the one who died first who doesn't get a nobel prize coz only 2 people can get one max so they had to wait until one carked it. That's who got the double helix. Darwin didn't know about genes even. That was Mendel, but not many people listened to the crazy pea happy monk for ages. Doesn't mean Darwin wasn't smart though. Listen to In Our Time from the BBC for a really good biographical podcast on Darwin.

National Geographic has an article this month on Darwin and another scientist working on evolution elsewhere in the world and how Darwin gets all the credit.

In his defense one can say that he did find out a few years earlier than the other guy but held off publishing the results.

In 8th grade I had to draw a chart with every possible pairing for peas for my science teacher. I F-ing hate Mendel.
Then we had to learn every bone in the human body, and every muscle... then we had to be able to identify 500 birds, a few hundred trees.... a bunch of latin names... oh man, you brought back a lot of bad feelings. 8th grade science sucked so hard...

Public school too.
I would rather have been blowing up tin.
It just hit me, WTF is Darwin Day? Where the heck did this day come from? I've never heard of it before? Is this some new day to fire another shot at the war between creationists and evolutionists??

NPR has been running a series looking at various Aspects of Darwing and Evolution today and throughout history.

This year marks 150 year anniversary of the publication of Darwin's Origin of a Species, so a lot of places are emphasizing him.
I believe that today is Darwin's birthday, so it was designated "Darwin day" by some .. or it could be one of those "only sometimes recognized" holidays like "leav a zucchini on your neighbor's doorstep day."
As for the debate ... I think a lot of people are realizing that there is a large and growing group who wish to say it was not resolved 100 years ago ... and further have fresh evidence to support it. (but that is for the already existing thread on the subject).

listened to an NPR show on Darwin... it took him over 20 years to publish his findings. part of the reason was because he was torn and conflicted over what he knew he was going to do to the world. darwin was a devout religious man and he felt as if he were committing murder by publishing his findings. he truly feared religious people would not be able to accept his findings and realize that god fit into evolution because god was behind the overall plan and rules of the world and evolution... interesting...-0

I also heard that he included Mendel's work in his bibliography, though he apparently hadn't studied it. I have no idea where I heard that though offhand.

If they can be classified it's proof that they're all different species and can't have evolved from a common ancestry.
