Probably dumb, but I need to know for sure before I move.
In team play, do players as a team hold a continent, or can only an individual?

Only an individual can hold a continent.

agreed,
however attacking your teammate to gain a continent might prove to be a disaster.
you need to kill your friends units and maybe loose some of your own, only to gain a maybe continent (the others could take it from you) even worse, youare not attacking your real opponant, so normally there are better ways to spend your units.(hopefully your teammate has just the one he has left there, otherwise do not even think about it.)

You should agree to take a continent from your team-mate before doing it not just go for it. Get them to give you their men from the territories around and then take out their territories which will just have 1 man on each. Depending on the type of game, ie. map/cards/etc, a continent bonus could prove
VERY USEFUL.
However...
In a team game only take the continent if you can hold it and get the bonus. Otherwise it could prove a pointless endeavour.
hope that helps, JB

You and your teamate can also deploy and fortify each others territories...
So try to move armies out of the way so neither one of you lose too much
to make a continent and add to your bonuses.
Your partner can fort his armies to you, making you stronger to get the task done
and leaving a single army to conquer on the necessary territories. You can reciprocate
by deploying and forting where your teamate needs help and making you both stronger.
Use the GAME CHAT to discuss these tactics and develop a strategy you're both
confortable with and go for it.

Okay, thanks, I've come to know well this, and also many other advanced concepts. however I'm sometimes (ie. often) having problems with teammates being completely non-comliant, to the point of past ridiculous. And ideas on how to get around that? I even have tried direct commands, such as full area names and direct directions to break language barriers and everything else to little avail.
Any ideas for coping with these problems? It's become the reason for 75% of my lost matches.

It's very simple. Find a good team mate to play with. You can't expect retards to turn into a team member just because you happen to end up in the same team.
