NFL Draft

Thoughts, reactions, complaints?

I thought that the Seahawks had their best draft in a long time, not only picking up the best defensive player, but picking up a Center, and a 1st rounder next year. I also like San Fran's draft, Crabtree will be great. But the worst draft easily went to Oakland in my opinion...

lmao not sure what oakland was thinking..maybe that's why they have sucked since the 70's.

I'm happy with the packers pick...

What's crazy is that if Crabtree hadn't been picked by San Fran he could have easily fallen to 13. Funny how the person most people thought was the best player in the draft barely stayed in the top 10. Heyward-Bey(sp?) was easily the biggest shock at #7. I'm still surprised that Shonn Greene has not been taken off the list yet. Best move I saw (I only watched the top 10 though) was the Jets trading up for Sanchez.

Question: who would you have picked: Sanchez or Stafford?

The only thing crazier than the Oakland's pick was the announcers defense for it.

The Bears freaking traded down out of the first day...I banged my head against the wall. They always do this shit.

easy, Stafford. i still don't trust sanchez, being in a "college-only" system and having only played 16 games. what separates him from Graham Harrell?

how about SF and SEA entering the 2010 QB market by getting 2010 1st rounders today? honestly, i think this is a great idea, because i wasnt impressed by the QBs, aside from Freeman, who was drafted too high, imo.

speaking of SF and SEA, who drafted ESPN's highest rated offensive and defensive players, which one will have the better career; Crabby or Curry? I'm going with Crabby

Both will have a huge impact. I say Crabby. Easily going to be a dominant force on whatever team he's on.

I'm not impressed with Sanchez and really his interview after being accepted by the Jets was weird.

I mean Stafford may sound a bit stupid the way he talks but he does know what he's talking about. Sanchez well...

Yeah, i am just not impressed by ANOTHER USC QB who is really unproven...

But, yeah, i really think that Crabby will have a wonderful career. I am a little unsure about Curry, but we will certainly see....

yeah experience is huge for QBs. I mean the stats show that QBs who graduated early don't do nearly as well. Playtime is the most important factor in that. Stafford I don't think that won't be a factor he has almost 3 full years as a starter and he seems to know football very well. Sanchez, 16 games as a starter makes it highly questionable.

that is so true.

in an unrelated, and totally stupid move, the Seahawks, who drafted Curry to replace Julian Peterson (who was traded for what amounted to be backups and Day 2 picks), dropped the other OLB from last year, Leroy Hill. He was signed as a Franchise tag, but apparently, they feel they can do better than Hill.... :x I knew the Seahawks couldn't do too many smart things all at once. =D>

I am sadly a Lions fan. Picking Matthew Stafford... ok, we all knew it was going to happen, right? I still preferred Aaron Curry, but whatever, I can see the reasoning and logic behind the pick. But can anyone explain to me why the Lions, proud owners of the second worst defense in HISTORY, took a tight end with their second first round pick??? And how about that safety out of Western Michigan, when they could have taken a middle linebacker, which is what they needed? Very frustrating, but typical. Go Red Wings!

My thoughts-

The Raiders have failed.
Jet's made a great trade for a QB that can replace Favre.
My favorite team the Packers did some excellent picks.
WTH did Virginia Tech's Macho Harris get drafted so late? He has great potential.

I'm going to try to defend Oakland, only because I'm a Maryland fan so I like Heyward-Bey. To clarify, I'm not happy he's stuck in Oakland, but I suppose he'll get more money for the first few years. , I'm going to assume that we are not experts. I'm positive the scouts checked out all four of the big receivers, including Crabby.

First, we can try to address the problems with Crabtree, but there aren't any... Some question his character, but that obviously had nothing to do with not drafting him; it is Oakland. Crabtree is an all around solid receiver, and will be successful with the 49ers in a few years.

Now, look at Heyward-Bey. The knock on him were his 'lack of production' in his college years. Kiper and a few other analysts said he was shut down in a few games last season, not even catching one pass. Furthermore, Heyward-Bey doesn't run routes as well as the other receivers. Now, why did they draft him? He's big, 6-2, 6-3 I believe, he can out jump most guys, and he's fast as shit. NFL coaches can teach a guy to catch, they can teach a guy to run routes, but they can't teach him to run fast and jump over defenders.

That is why Oakland took Heyward-Bey. They believe they can coach him to be more successful than Crabby. If I were Al Davis, and I'm glad I'm not, I would have taken Crabtree or traded down to get Heyward-Bey. Heyward-Bey may be a bust in Oakland, but he will find success after he's done there.

Does any one have any good info on either Deon Butler or the Rutgers QB? As a Seahawks fan, I'd like to learn more about them, and from a fan's point of view, not the BS you find on team web sites.

Yeah man, I really hope Sanchez comes through. But you just know the Daily News is thrilled, because the first time he screws up, they'll run a huge "Dirty Sanchez" headline... And I'll still buy it just because.

Looks like they've made some good calls on defense, and even though they haven't picked up a WR yet, I'm happy enough with the way things are shaking out to have faith. They can always make some trades later if necessary. This is going to be a building year anyway.

LET'S GO JETS!

Yeah I can't wait to see that headline, and I'm happy to see you guys can get a QB without stealing one from us. Although after Favre's season I'm glad you did.

Favre gave me a great game, smashing the Titans. That's about all I really care to remember. Just that one game. Well, the others before it were good too. Although we shall never speak of anything that happened after the Titans again.

Even with your logic I still think it was complete fail by the Raiders. As for Crabtree, if he has even a qb who's a little above average to throw to him he could be an almost immediate sucess in the NFL. The guy's got a rare talent and is the best receiver to come out of the draft in a while.

Not my logic, it's what I'm guessing is Oakland's attempt at logic. Like I said, I would have taken Crabby.

Hard to believe "any team looking for a receiver" could pass on Crabtree.

Ok folks, I've been out of touch with the draft this weekend as I was camping in Northern Michigan for trout opener. Away from the phone, ESPN, and the web. You know roughing it. I just got back and really haven't had much time to read anything about the draft.

Now please, I know I'm setting myself up here but I've been a life long Lions fan and really want them to do well sometime in my lifetime even though down deep I know that's asking a lot. Can you give me the skinny on the Lie-down's draft? I know they took Stafford 1st (bad choice my opinion) but what else? I figure I can count on you guys to be more thoughtful than the talking heads on ESPN or the web. Thanks.

I don't think Stafford was a bad choice but I don't think he was necessarily the best choice for them. They needed the help on defense but I think their bigger mistake was with their second pick as a tightend. They should have gone defense there and if not found an OT or guard.

I actually like the Stafford-Calvin Johnson hook-up that's gonna happen. But i don't know much else about the Lions' draft, cuz i was totally focused on the NFC West. However, i personally guarantee that the lions will not go 0-16 8-)

A few years ago the Houston Texans caught a lot of shit for passing up Reggie Bush and Vince Young to take a defensive end. Initially it looked like they made a big mistake, but all those nay sayers are eating crow now as that move has paid off big time. I really hope Stafford* works out for Detroit and gives them a nudge in the right direction. If not, he should still be valuable on the trading block to pick up some quality players to fill positions they really need. But that's looking into the distant future... and I don't anticipate a quick turnaround for the Lions after last year's entry into the record NFL record books.

*I'd like to have seen Stafford and a few others stay in the NCAA for another season,
but I can't blame them for not risking injury . . . and cashing in their chips this year.
