Phony British Accents

I just rented "Troy" a few days back, starring Brad Pitt. It's a pretty good movie, with some good fighting scenes, but why the hell do these American actors feel the need to put on a phony British accent when they're portraying ancient Greeks or ancient Romans? It is SO annoying to listen to that crap -- it basically ruins an otherwise good film.

Brad Pitt is from Oklahoma, for God's sake, not Liverpool, and Achilles ain't British either!

And while we're on the subject, what the hell is up with Madonna? She's been putting on a phony British accent for the last 15 years or so, whether she's in a movie or not, and she's from Michigan! Does she really think she's fooling anyone?

No...Actually this is on of the many problems I have with this movie.

I can verify that I do not speak with a British accent... even when I'm speaking Greek.

Furthermore, notice the complexion of the Greeks in that movie - fair haired, fair-skinned, light eyes... ridiculous. At least in 300 they made the Greeks look Greek.

Good points! If you only had "Troy" to go on, you'd think that all the ancient Greeks were a bunch of blue-eyed, blonde-haired, British fops!

Same thing... because clearly what is now modern day Turkey was inhabited by the Germanic tribes of northern Europe.

Stupid rascist movie people.

Was I the only one who was disappointed that the movie was not more closely based off of The Iliad?

I wanted to see angry Gods...

I'm with you on that. They made a ten year war into a week long battle. And that was only the tip of the iceberg (though I did like the scene with 1000 ships).

Q: How do you spot a greek woman?
A: She doesn't need a suspender belt to keep her stockings up

Well I don't know about too many phony British accents, and I haven't actually seen that movie. But I tell you what I don't like;

Some actual British accents. All the slapper, skanky English tramps who are over here in Australia on permanent holiday and end up staying in St Kilda, Melbourne and then have unprotected sex all the time and end up having to come into my work (i work at a medical clinic) and say absurd things to me like - 'I fink i 'ave the clap, 'ow much is it to see a docta?'

Horrible, horrible skanks. Sometimes they actually send a chill down my spine when they talk to me like that. It's disgusting

You seem to have far too many cockneys. Perhaps you attract them with a strong smell of blood.

I hate how badly british accents are portrayed, either as the one above or the ello guvnor ol bean style. No one speaks like the later and those who speak like the former are all the cast of eastenders.
