FYI It's not the execution that costs so much its the appeals, the prosecution, etc. which make the life sentence roughly $100,000 cheaper per criminal than the execution.

well if you look at feudalism from the outside, since so much of rights to eventual land ownership rested in the first son, what were you going to do with all those extra sons.
