How does freestyle strategy differ than playing sequentially? Is there any hazards to look out for or benefits to take advantage of?

It seems like in an escalating game, the map doesn't matter as much.

Sounds like quitting to me. Based on my vast experience on this site, the only thing to do if something gets in your way is to throw every single troop you have at the problem, regardless of it's strategic significance.
