Wha?! What just happened there?

Post by LuxNocte »

Hi!

I'm enjoying my first few games, but my perfect winning streak looks like it's about to fall. (I've finished 2 games...I just really wanted to get the phrase "perfect winning streak" out while I could. :D )

I'm trying to follow Neon Peon's advice, and learn from people who are playing well. But I'm having trouble following exactly what has happened. The log doesn't have dice rolls, unsuccessful attacks, etc...I have trouble placing the stacks of armies in context, especially if the map is unfamiliar. Is there any way to see exactly what's going on during opponent turns without sitting and watching the screen until they log on?

i suggest taking snapshots,,
even in sunny games you can see how they progress... really useful!

basic anwser. no.
you cannot follow the game unless you are right there watching when they are playing.
the log does not show failed attacks, stacks lost ect ect as you already discovered.

in multiple player games, it does pay off to take a snapshot every once and a while. e.g. using firefox with BOB, or for IE users, printscreen and paint..

using the many snapshots you can get a much better feel for how the game is going and who goes after what, even if the log does not tell everything, it will tell you more then is apparent on first glance..

e.g. if you know all the stacks (no fog) and you see numbers change without drops on them, you also know how the dice went... where and then the opponents attack. who is waiting, who is growing who is a menace.

yup, you can learn a lot.

I think it depends on how good your memory is. I have never taken a snap shot in the game and I can usually remember who was where with how many armies, but if I get above about 25 active games I have to leave notes for myself or my team at times.

But there are 6=7 boards where I can just know how people are going to play them based on their number of games played and rank...then there is one board I idiotically keep playing even though I suck hardcore at it...I bet I have dropped 3-5k points on this particular board...

classic?

also yes of course memory comes in to play, but with many games on the same board it becomes confusing very quickly..
snapshots is a great tool but i change computers between the office and my home and my phone so can't always rely on them.. but i try to snap away or leave short notes in gamechat to myself..

back in the days on feudal i actually used to write down the whole board with everything i saw in some sort of shorthand..
but snaps is less timeconsuming ;)

Thanks! Snapshotting does help quite a bit. I see the dice hate other people as well, not just me. (Seriously, random.org...what did I ever do to you?! I'm willing to offer a bribe...)

BOB doesn't seem to play well with Chrome, so I had to dust off Firefox. The extra info is pretty sweet too. Maybe once I get accustomed to the site, and to the maps, I'll be able to follow the game better.

Rockfist, I feel your pain...consider the maps you don't do well on "Hard mode". Challenge is good. :-)

What do ya'll think about U.S. Senate map? It seems like a good map to learn, relatively straightforward, but lots of ins and outs for strategery.

US Senate is one of my favourite maps. Hit me up if you want a couple of games on it

Nah, classic doesn't count because everyone knows it.

Feudal is the one I lose constantly on possibly because I never take notes on it, but more probably because I am not patient. I always give up playing it for long periods then figure it might work better now...and it never does. I honestly do win some games I swear to you...just not on that board.
