but can anything be done about getting bonuses in the first round of play. It's not like you did anything more than the other player to get the bonus, you were just lucky. Maybe this was possible in the board game (Which I have never played btw) so it just stuck like all the other rules. I find it the most unfair thing about gameplay here.

It only happens very rarely, and in both CC and the board game the territories that you get are random. So...

how does it work in the board game? do you draw cards with names of territories or something?

personally, I agree. Not only does the player get a continent to start (huge bonus, but fair because it's random) but also gets extra troops on his first troops in which he can secure his bonus. I think it's a problem and makes the game "broken". I think that you should not get a continent bonus your first turn. I think it would be entirely appropriate to have a house rule saying "no continent bonuses in first round."
