Disassociate rank from number of games completed

Why does rank have to be associated with number of completed games...it seems to me that points alone should be the criteria

You're only one rank behind. By the time I hit sergeant, I was nearly a captain. And I'm a lieutenant, but I have been within 4 points of major. Just keep playing, you'll get there if you're really that good. The points start getting a lot harder to get around 1300 points.
