Diplomacy Map - help/advice required

Post by douglasefresh »

Hello All,

I don't know if many of you are familiar with Alan Calhammer's board game diplomacy, but well - long story short - its a great game. I'd like to produce a CC map based on the Diplomacy provinces (basically Western Europe circa 1900 - including the Great Powers of England, France, Germany, Italy, Austria-Hungary, Russia & Turkey).

I'm confident that I can produce the artwork and deal with the xml side of things (with help from the community along the way of course), but obviously there may be issues as far as copyright is concerned and wondered if any of you Mods etc. might have a clue as to how I should go about clearing this with the owners (the offshoot company that now owns the game is owned by Hasbro) or even if it needs to be worried about at all...

I've seen a version of monopoly in production in the foundry and wonder if this has been an issue for any other CC map makers - or even if its an issue at all! - after all the map is all I want to use: - the game mechanics are completely different (Maybe I just need to change the territory names?)

All advice would be welcome

Best

Copyright wise, its a rather big block, Monopoly had every single copyrighed thing (name squars ect) changed. Diplomacy should be easier as all you have to do is remove the name diplomacy. However I do not see how the map will work without becoming too like the europe map we already have or having awful gameplay. Any chance you could give a rough sketch to show how you plan on converting it to risk.

Thanks for the reply. There are as many inspirational variants to dip as there are to conquerclub, but i intend to base my map around the standard, or 1900 variant, which expands to include more of north africa and the middle east. I think to 'port' it to conquer club rules would be to make the bonuses directly connected to certain military positions in a game of Dip, as well as several continent bonuses within larger ones - we'll see. I guess I'll present it all by the book soon enough. Cheers

I thought of this, too, and I have adapted the Diplomacy board to take a stab at it. I have a first draft, and have been trying to find the time to post it, since I only have windows Paint, no fancy graphics program. Would the OP be interested in a look? Maybe we can collaborate?

Also of note: Adobe recently released a web-based version of PhotoShop. It's missing a lot of the glitzy features, but it's free. Here's the link to PhotoShop Express: http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop ... moid=CBTVM

There are several other free ones, links are in the topic Map Making Tools in the main Foundry.

Note that's why I didn't post it.

But thanks for the help.
