The Romans kicked the Jews out of Israel thousands of years ago because they were rebelling. They shipped them to and scattered them around Europe. Jews that have returned to Israel (as well as some other people who live in Israel) are modern Israelis.

yeah, i've gotta back up AD here.

it is a distinct ethnicity with a rich cultural history that i admire and would defend if necessary.

It is not a "race" as most anthropologists might catagorize it, it is however an ethnic group to itself. It is also a religious community.

So, it is kind of both, but moreso one that the other.

While I tend to be quite black-and-white, I do recognize that some things don't easily fit into pretty little boxes.
